Before it even airs, HBO has renewed the upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff for a second season. Titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the show will debut on January 18, 2026, and is set roughly 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, but after House of the Dragon. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey, and his young apprentice, Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell.
Despite the controversial finale of Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin’s world continues to be incredibly profitable for HBO. Game of Thrones is still considered a landmark and highly impactful television series, and the prequel House of the Dragon successfully revived the franchise, earning praise and even enhancing the overall narrative.
HBO has greenlit a new series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and it’s expected to be a major addition to the world of Game of Thrones. At a recent event in New York, Casey Bloys, head of HBO and HBO Max, confirmed that both House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have been renewed, guaranteeing at least two seasons for the new series.
According to Bloys, the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to premiere in 2027, which is a fairly quick turnaround for a show of its scope. Season 3 of House of the Dragon is planned for next year, following the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and will continue the story of the Targaryen family’s ongoing civil war.
Francesca Orsi, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, announced that new seasons of these shows will be released over the next three years, showcasing the depth and creativity of George R.R. Martin’s world. She believes audiences will especially enjoy the upcoming story of Dunk and Egg, which she describes as an inspiring tale beautifully brought to life by George R.R. Martin and showrunner Ira Parker, and will premiere in January.
The cast of ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ features Daniel Ings, Bertie Carvel, Danny Webb, Sam Spruell, Shaun Thomas, Finn Bennett, Edward Ashley, Tanzyn Crawford, Henry Ashton, Youssef Kerkour, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, and Daniel Monks. They play various knights and members of the Targaryen family during a time in Westeros where dragons are extinct but not forgotten.
Despite the disappointing ending of Game of Thrones, expectations are high for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This new series faces a challenge, as it aims to deliver a different kind of story within the familiar world of Westeros. However, fans will likely still be captivated by the rich details, heroic characters, and complex themes of power and morality that the setting offers.
