The upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will introduce new Targaryen family members to the screen. As you might expect, these characters are connected to people we’ve already seen in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Even though House of the Dragon is still airing, HBO is planning another Game of Thrones prequel, set in a previously unseen time in Westeros, to be released in January 2026.
The upcoming series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will focus on the stories of two main characters: Duncan the Tall and King Aegon V Targaryen, nicknamed Egg. Set about 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the show falls chronologically between that series and House of the Dragon, allowing viewers to see the lineage of characters they already know.
HBO just released the official trailer for the show, giving fans their first glimpse of the Targaryen family members who will be featured. Because the series is based on George R.R. Martin’s *A Song of Ice and Fire* books, viewers will be able to see how these characters connect to those they’ve already seen in the previous show.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO Max on January 18, 2026.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Targaryen Family Tree Explained
Aegon V Targaryen (Egg)
Aegon V Targaryen – you might recognize the name from *Game of Thrones* – will be the central character in *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*. He’s the young boy known as Egg who appears in the trailer.
Egg is the descendant of Viserys I Targaryen, the character played by Paddy Considine in *House of the Dragon*, tracing his lineage back several generations. He’s directly related to Viserys, but through Rhaenyra Targaryen’s side of the family, not Alicent Hightower’s. Egg’s ancestors include Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen’s son, Viserys II, making Rhaenyra his great-great-great-grandmother.
Regarding the character Egg and his connection to *Game of Thrones*, his family history links him to several figures from the show. Egg’s grandson was Aerys II Targaryen, better known as the Mad King. Because the Mad King was Daenerys Targaryen’s father, that makes Egg Daenerys’ great-grandfather.
Aerion Targaryen
The trailer for *Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* featured Aerion Targaryen, easily recognizable by his short white hair and a helmet adorned with metal flames. Also known as Aerion the Monstrous and Aerion Brightflame, he’s a stark contrast to the character Egg.
Egg and Aerion are brothers, with Aerion being the elder. This means Aerion is closer to inheriting the Iron Throne than Egg. As siblings, they share a family connection to Rhaenyra and Viserys, who are their distant ancestors – specifically, Rhaenyra is an ancestor many generations removed, and Viserys is as well.
That would also mean that Aerion is the great-great-uncle of Daenerys Targaryen.
Daeron Targaryen
Daeron Targaryen is one of Egg’s brothers, making him Aerion’s brother too. As the oldest son of King Maekar I, Daeron was technically a prince of Westeros and next in line to inherit the Iron Throne after his father.
Daeron is Daenerys Targaryen’s great-great-uncle, and is related to Rhaenyra and Viserys I as a descendant several generations removed.
Aemon Targaryen
Though he didn’t appear in the trailer for *Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*, Aemon Targaryen will be familiar to many *Game of Thrones* viewers. He was Egg’s older brother and went on to become a maester before dedicating his life to the Night’s Watch.
Fans of Game of Thrones will likely recall Aemon Targaryen as a mentor to both Samwell Tarly and Jon Snow at Castle Black. In a poignant scene near his death, Aemon had visions of his brother, Egg, even speaking his name. While Aemon spent a significant amount of time at the Citadel during the events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the original stories reveal he was the one who gave Aegon V the nickname “Egg” because he admired the young man’s kind and innocent nature.
Maekar I Targaryen
Maekar Targaryen, also known as Egg, has four sons: Aerion, Daeron, and Aemon. He’ll appear in the new series and is the king’s younger brother at the start of the show.
Maekar is a descendant of Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, tracing his lineage back six generations to Viserys I.
Dyanna Dayne
As a huge fan of the series, I always find the family connections fascinating! So, Dyanna Dayne is Egg’s mom, and because of her last name, it means Egg is related to some really important Daynes from the past. Like, Arthur Dayne – the Sword of the Morning? He’d actually be a distant cousin of Egg’s! It’s cool how these family trees weave together, adding layers to the story.
That would also mean that Arthur was a distant cousin of Daenerys Targaryen.
Baelor Targaryen
Baelor Targaryen is the older brother of Maekar and serves as Hand of the King to Daeron II, who will be king at the start of the events in *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*.
Baelor is Egg’s uncle, but it’s important not to mix him up with Baelor the Blessed, who was a relative on King Aegon III’s side of the family.
Viserys I Targaryen
As we’ve discussed, Viserys I Targaryen is an ancestor of the Targaryens featured in *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*. He’s Egg’s great-great-great-great-grandfather, which simplifies the family history a bit. To illustrate, Egg’s father, Maekar, is Viserys’ great-great-great-grandson.
Viserys’ children with Alicent Hightower didn’t have any descendants who survived. While they did have children of their own, all of those grandchildren died, ending that branch of the family line.
Alicent Hightower
Alicent Hightower isn’t a direct ancestor of Egg or any of the Targaryens we’ll see in the new HBO Max series. All the Targaryens featured will be descendants of Rhaenyra and Daemon, making Alicent something like a very distant step-great-grandmother to Egg.
Aemma Arryn
Aemma Arryn was Rhaenyra’s mother, making her an ancestor of Egg and the rest of the Targaryen family. Considering Viserys is their many-times-great-grandfather, Aemma would be their many-times-great-grandmother.
Daemon Targaryen
Daemon Targaryen was married to Rhaenyra and had three children with her, including a daughter named Visenya who died shortly after birth. As the brother of King Viserys, he’s also the grandfather and uncle of the young prince Egg and his siblings.
Corlys Velaryon
Although Corlys Velaryon is a key figure in *House of the Dragon*, he isn’t directly related by blood to Egg or anyone in his family line. While Corlys was married to Rhaenys Targaryen – who was Viserys Targaryen’s cousin – this creates a connection through marriage, but not a blood relation.
Rhaenys Targaryen
Rhaenys Targaryen and Viserys Targaryen were cousins. This means Rhaenys and Viserys’s son, Aegon (known as ‘Egg’), are very distantly related.
Aemond Targaryen
Aemond Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen shared a father, Viserys, and a mother, Alicent, making them half-siblings. Because of their shared Targaryen ancestry, Aemond and Egg (another character with Targaryen blood) were distantly related, though not closely.
Aegon II Targaryen
Aegon II Targaryen and Aemond shared a similar relationship with Egg – they were both Rhaenyra’s half-brothers.
Helaena Targaryen
Helaena Targaryen, the daughter of Alicent and Viserys I, shares the same parentage as Aegon II and Aemond, making them all siblings to Egg.
Rhaenyra Targaryen
Rhaenyra Targaryen was the daughter of Viserys I and a distant ancestor to both Egg and his brothers, as well as Daenerys Targaryen.
Find out what will happen to Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon Seasons 3 and 4.
Laenor Velaryon
Okay, let’s talk about Laenor Velaryon. While he *technically* had Targaryen lineage through his mother, Rhaenys, his connection to Rhaenyra’s kids is… complicated. They weren’t actually his biological children, and despite being legally married to Rhaenyra until his supposed death, he’s really just a very distant cousin to young Aegon, or ‘Egg,’ as everyone calls him. It’s a surprisingly tenuous link when you consider everything!
Laena Velaryon
Laena was Laenor’s sister, meaning she and Egg were related just as Laenor and Egg were. She was a distant cousin to him.
Jaehaerys Targaryen
Jaehaerys Targaryen was the son of Aegon II and Helaena. Tragically, he died very young, before he could grow up or have children. He would have been related to Rhaenyra as a half-nephew, and also a distant cousin to Egg.
Jaehaera Targaryen
Jaehaera Targaryen was the twin sister of Jaehaerys, and like him, she died as a baby. This meant she never had the chance to grow up or have children. Her family connections are the same as Jaehaerys’.
Viserys II Targaryen
Viserys II Targaryen was a son of Daemon and Rhaenyra. He later became king, and his descendants – through his son Egg – eventually included Daenerys Targaryen.
So, Viserys II would have been Egg’s great-great-grandfather.
Aegon III Targaryen
Aegon III Targaryen, the second child of Rhaenyra and Daemon, became king of Westeros. Though he married into the Velaryon family, his descendants would later become known as the Blackfyres.
Aegon III would have been Egg’s great-great-great-uncle.
Jacaerys Velaryon
As a big fan of the show, I always found the Jacaerys storyline fascinating. Officially, everyone *said* he was the son of Rhaenyra and Laenor Velaryon, but it’s pretty clear that wasn’t biologically true. The real father was actually Harwin Strong, which created a lot of tension and drama, and it’s something a lot of viewers picked up on!
As a big fan of the show, I always found it interesting that Jacaerys and Egg – though connected through Rhaenyra – weren’t actually close relatives. They shared some family history, sure, but it wasn’t a direct bloodline like siblings would have.
Lucerys Velaryon
Lucerys Velaryon was Jacaerys’s brother and, like him, a son of Rhaenyra. However, Lucerys wasn’t a direct ancestor of Egg – their fathers came from different family lines.
Joffrey Velaryon
Joffrey Velaryon was a full brother to Lucerys and Jacaerys, meaning he shared the same parents. Because of this, he and Egg (Aegon) were distantly related through their bloodlines.
Baela Targaryen
Baela Targaryen was the daughter of Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon. Daemon was married to Laena before Rhaenyra; however, Laena tragically died when she flew into dragonfire, leaving Daemon to raise their two daughters, Baela and Rhaena.
I’ve been trying to figure out the family connections, and it’s pretty complex! Baela didn’t have any kids herself, but she was related to Aegon and Viserys – she was their half-sister. That means the characters Egg and the Targaryens we see in *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms* are actually distant cousins! If you trace the lineage, Baela’s father would be Egg’s great-great-great-grandfather. It’s amazing how far back those connections go!
Rhaena Targaryen
Rhaena Targaryen, a character who differs from her portrayal in the original story, was Baela’s sister. This makes her relationship to Egg, Daeron, and Aerion identical to Baela’s. Like her sister, Rhaena did not have any children.
Daenerys Targaryen
As a huge fan of the *Song of Ice and Fire* series, I think Daenerys Targaryen is definitely the most recognizable member of her family these days. It’s really interesting to me that she’s actually not that far removed from Aegon V – known as Egg – in the family tree. What blows my mind even more is that some of the characters Daenerys knows and interacts with actually *met* Egg back in the day. It really highlights how connected everyone is in that world!
Simply put, Egg is Daenerys Targaryen’s great-grandfather. Daenerys’ father, Aerys Targaryen (also known as the Mad King), was the son of Jaehaerys Targaryen, and Jaehaerys was Egg’s son. This means Daenerys is a direct descendant of the main character in *A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms*.
Viserys Targaryen
I always felt so much sympathy for Daenerys, especially considering the brother she had to deal with! Viserys Targaryen truly believed he was destined to rule. His whole family, going way back, were kings of Westeros – his father, grandfather, all of them! That’s why he was so fixated on reclaiming the Iron Throne in *Game of Thrones*. He genuinely felt it was his by birthright, since the Targaryens had held power since Aegon I first conquered Westeros around 300 years before the events of the show.
Similar to Daenerys, Viserys is a descendant of Aegon the Conqueror (he’s his great-grandson). But unlike his ancestor, Viserys doesn’t share Aegon’s qualities.
Rhaegar Targaryen
I’ve always been fascinated by the Targaryen family, and Rhaegar was a particularly intriguing figure. He was the older brother of Daenerys and Viserys, and as the eldest son of the ‘Mad King,’ he was supposed to be the next ruler. Sadly, he never got the chance. Robert Baratheon defeated him at the Trident, and that opened the door for Tywin Lannister to essentially take over King’s Landing for Robert. It’s a tragic story, really – a lost heir and the end of an era.
Rhaegar Targaryen died in battle against Robert Baratheon, but he had a son, Aegon, who Robert never discovered. Fans of *Game of Thrones* know this son by another name: Jon Snow.
Aegon Targaryen (Jon Snow)
Wow, Season 6 of *Game of Thrones* completely blew my mind! I honestly didn’t see it coming, but they revealed that Jon Snow isn’t who we thought he was – he’s actually a Targaryen! Even bigger, it turns out he has a legitimate claim to the Iron Throne. Seriously, it was a twist that changed *everything* and left me reeling!
With no children of his own, Jon became the last Targaryen after Daenerys passed away. Because of his family history, he’s related to every Targaryen who ever lived. Specifically, he’s a direct descendant of Aegon Targaryen, known as Egg.
Rhaego Targaryen
Rhaego Targaryen was the child Daenerys Targaryen was carrying with Khal Drogo, but he was stillborn. He died before birth because of the blood magic Daenerys used in an attempt to save Drogo’s life.
Rhaego would technically have been Egg’s great-great-grandson.
