While shows like Game of Thrones and The Witcher achieve huge popularity, a show’s lasting impact isn’t always about how many viewers it attracts. Galavant, a charming musical comedy set in a fantastical world, didn’t reach massive audiences, but it still made a strong impression. Featuring music by the renowned Alan Menken and appearances by well-known actors, Galavant quickly gained a dedicated following during its two seasons.
Even though it was cancelled after just one season ten years ago, the musical comedy Galavant still holds up remarkably well. It deserves recognition for doing something different in a crowded TV landscape. Its playful humor, charming characters, and catchy songs made it a refreshing alternative to darker, more dramatic shows like Game of Thrones, and it’s gained a dedicated and lasting fan base as a result.
Galavant Was Underappreciated In Its Time
Galavant was a funny and energetic fantasy musical that sadly didn’t find a large audience when it aired from 2015 to 2016. The show is set in the kingdom of Valencia, which has just been conquered by the greedy King Richard. To make things worse, Richard also steals and marries the woman Galavant loves. The series follows Galavant as he joins forces with his kind-hearted assistant, Sid, and the former Princess Isabella to reclaim the kingdom, rescue his beloved Madalena, and overthrow the king.
Don’t let the medieval setting fool you – Galavant isn’t like other fantasy shows. It playfully pokes fun at common fantasy tropes, delivering laughs from start to finish. The show features a charmingly flawed hero, Galavant, hilarious cameos (like Ricky Gervais), and a willingness to avoid taking itself too seriously. This self-aware and often cheeky humor still feels fresh and funny even years later.
One of the things that truly sets Galavant apart is its incredible music, created by the renowned Alan Menken – the composer behind Disney classics like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid. The show boasts a surprisingly strong cast and features fantastic musical numbers, including several incredibly catchy songs that will stay with you long after you’ve watched them. While not everyone loves musicals, Galavant‘s songs are both memorable and delightfully funny, often with a unique medieval flair.
The second season of Galavant really hits its mark, telling a surprisingly engaging story of King Richard’s journey to make amends. After being betrayed by his queen and closest advisor, Richard reluctantly teams up with Galavant. Timothy Omundson gives a fantastic performance as the initially spoiled king, showing his growth as he learns to be selfless and heroic. Despite Galavant’s dislike for him, Richard unexpectedly becomes the central character of the season, proving that even a quirky and over-the-top fantasy show can deliver genuine surprises.
Why Galavant Never Got a Third Season
Despite a dedicated fanbase, Galavant was always facing an uphill battle. It originally aired as a mid-season show in January and February, and while it had a good timeslot on Sunday nights, it competed with popular awards shows, reality TV, and dramas like The X-Files. Although the ratings weren’t terrible, the show wasn’t initially planned to last beyond one season. Getting renewed for a second season was a pleasant surprise, and the show even joked about it in the opening musical number of Season 2.
As much as I loved it, Galavant really only got one season to shine. The creators knew a third season was a long shot, so they wrapped things up pretty well in season two, while still leaving the door open for more—there’s even a hilarious song where Galavant literally asks ABC to bring it back! We fans tried to rally and get it renewed, launching a campaign, but sadly it wasn’t enough. ABC officially cancelled it in May 2016, and it was heartbreaking to say goodbye.
Even though it didn’t last long on television, the show Galavant was very well-received by critics. It currently has an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers highlighting its distinctive style and successful blend of music and humor. In fact, the second season received perfect scores from critics on the site. Viewers also loved Galavant, giving it a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Though it only lasted two seasons, the musical comedy Galavant quickly gained a dedicated following and proved its charm. Even ten years later, the show still has passionate fans, though hopes for a reboot are fading. Despite its short run, Galavant remains just as funny and enjoyable to watch today.
Galavant is available to buy or rent on YouTube TV.
