The comedy series English Teacher has been cancelled by FX after two seasons. Deadline reported the news on November 12th, but the network hasn’t explained why. The show, created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, followed Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas, as he navigated the challenges of teaching and his personal life. The series featured Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton, and Carmen Christopher as colleagues, and included a student cast featuring Romy Mars, Ivy Wolk, and Aliyah’s Interlude, among others.
The first season of English Teacher, which debuted last September, received nominations for several awards, including the Critics’ Choice Television Awards and Film Independent Spirit Awards. It also earned a nomination from the Writers Guild of America for the episode “Linda.” Later, the show faced controversy after former colleague Jon Ebeling accused creator Michael Alvarez of sexual assault in a December 2024 article in New York Magazine. Alvarez, through his lawyer, denied the allegations, stating any interactions with Ebeling were consensual. FX, the network airing the show, said they had previously reviewed similar claims before the show launched, but Ebeling never contacted them directly with concerns and declined to comment further. Despite the controversy, English Teacher was renewed for a second season in February.
