Furniture Comes to Life in Twisty Psychological Horror ‘Who Knows?’ Based on Guy de Maupassant’s Story and Backed by Federation Spain (EXCLUSIVE)

Spain’s Federation has taken on the psychological horror movie titled “Who Knows?” (originally “Qui Sap?”), which will be helmed by director Carlo Padial.

Located in Madrid and affiliated with Federation Studios, the company is under Juan Solá’s leadership and has recently collaborated as a film producer. This collaboration is for a movie currently in its final stages of development and financing, alongside Catalunya Federation Studios, Corte y Confección de Películas, and Outpost 31 Pictures.

Who Knows?” is inspired by a brief tale penned by the 19th-century author, Guy de Maupassant, that revolves around a man who asserts his cherished furniture seems to possess its own life. This notable French writer is also recognized for works such as “Boule de Suif” and “Bel Ami,” with the latter being adapted in 2012 and featuring Robert Pattinson on screen.

This work is penned by Padial and Desirée de Fez, featuring a blend of social critique and bleak humor, with Pol López (“See You in Another Life”) portraying the lead role.

Padial openly acknowledged that he’s long desired to transform it. He confessed that this movie serves as a flexible interpretation of an enchanting tale, shifting the plot to contemporary Barcelona.

To me, the concept of furniture having life in the initial tale is simply genius. This unique and unexplored creativity is captivating. It embodies everything I desire in a movie. Remarkably, it carries substantial psychological depth, making it strikingly relevant even today.

It tackles several modern problems that we face: mental insecurity, feeling detached from our environment, and feelings of isolation in a world growing more and more depersonalized.

Padial sees the film as a tale of “contemporary anxiety.”

The tale’s financial concerns reflect immediate worry, a key aspect we’ve aimed to maintain and amplify in our rendition. One more thing I appreciate about this narrative is its intricate plotline, filled with unexpected turns. Occasionally, it presents fresh elements.”

Or simply:

“Financial worries characterize the current state of the story; a quality we’ve aimed to preserve and strengthen in our adaptation. Another appealing aspect is the complex, twisting narrative—it occasionally introduces something novel.

In a fresh approach, the storyline revolves around a recently divorced artist. Initially, he attempts to rebuild his life by outfitting his home with IKEA furniture, but, like many others, finds it challenging to put it together. Consequently, he buys used items from an enigmatic vendor. However, when these items begin to move on their own at night, he understands that his world, too, is on the verge of crumbling apart.

The Barcelona-born director explained that this movie offers a means for him to delve into modern-day bewilderment, a sensation shared by many, by employing genre conventions. He also emphasized the intricate link between personal and extraordinary experiences in his exploration.

Maria Rocher, the executive producer, pointed out: “Carlo Padial has discovered a tale that lets him mix wacky comedy with biting societal critique, merging the ordinary lives of young people residing in Barcelona with the bizarre and internet conspiracy theories.

It’s exciting news that ‘Who Knows?’ is set to premiere at Cannes, joining the Frontières Platform lineup. Buckle up, it’s going to be a thrilling ride!
