‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ is a Streaming Hit on the Netflix Global Chart

A fantastic and often overlooked action film is climbing the charts again. After director George Miller seemed to finish with the Mad Max series, Tom Hardy successfully took over the role previously played by Mel Gibson in Mad Max: Fury Road. Following the success of that movie, Miller created a prequel. Now, this critically acclaimed (90% on Rotten Tomatoes) dystopian film is currently at number 9 on Netflix and is worth revisiting.

Miller directed, produced, and co-wrote Furiosa with Nico Lathouris. The film is a prequel to Fury Road, revealing the origins of the iconic character. Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit, Peaky Blinders) stars as Furiosa, a role previously played by Charlize Theron, and Chris Hemsworth (known from the Marvel Cinematic Universe) plays the villain, Dementus. The film also features Tom Burke, Alyla Browne, Lachy Hulme, and Nathan Jones. Here’s what the movie is about:

Young Furiosa is kidnapped from her home and taken by a large group of bikers led by the ruthless Dementus. While traveling across the desolate Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel, ruled by the tyrannical Immortan Joe. As Dementus and Joe clash for control, Furiosa struggles to find a way back to her people.

‘Furiosa’s Box Office Struggle Has Put the Franchise Back on Hold

Although Furiosa received very positive reviews – with 88% of audiences on Rotten Tomatoes saying they enjoyed it – the movie didn’t perform well enough at the box office to guarantee future sequels. While critics liked it, fewer people bought tickets, and with a worldwide gross of only $173.8 million against a $168 million budget, it was considered a financial failure. Director George Miller has ideas for another Mad Max film, The Wasteland, but it’s unclear if he’ll be able to make it. He mentioned in February what his plans were for the future of the series:

I have a new script, but after years of working with stories, I’ve realized I have far too many ideas. They’re not just floating around in my head—I’ve developed many of them into full screenplays or detailed outlines. I’ve always been a bit of a daydreamer, actually. In fact, my teachers used to write on my report cards that I’d do better in school if I stopped daydreaming so much!

There are several potential projects I’m considering, including a Mad Max film. While it’s not my immediate priority – I have two other projects I’m focusing on right now – I’m open to the possibility if everything works out. Making a movie is unpredictable; things often change, and plans don’t always come together. So, we’ll just have to see what happens.
