The popular anime series Brotherhood has been overtaken in popularity. The 2009 remake of Fullmetal Alchemist is now being surpassed by a newer anime that’s currently a hit in the United States.
For years, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was considered the best anime ever by many fans. But the dedicated fanbase that fiercely defended its top ranking in the early 2000s has seen its position challenged. This became clear when another anime took the #1 spot on My Anime List in 2024. Now, FMA: Brotherhood has lost another title – it’s no longer the highest-rated action anime. That honor now belongs to a different, highly praised dark fantasy anime that’s currently popular in the United States.
Chainsaw Man: The Movie Dethrones Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as #1 Action Anime
As of October 26, 2025, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is currently the highest-rated title, boasting an average score of 9.17 on MyAnimeList. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, which previously held the top spot, is now in second place with a score of 9.10. Rounding out the top three is the 2021 anime film Gintama: The Very Final, which has a score of 9.05.
The recent Chainsaw Man: The Movie could be just the start of a big surge in popularity for the series. Currently, The Reze Arc is very close to becoming the highest-rated anime of all time, with a score of 9.17 – only slightly behind Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End‘s 9.29. It’s worth noting that Frieren was previously ranked even higher, after surpassing Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood earlier this year in March 2024.
This sad and imaginative anime used to have an average review score of 9.39, but it’s now dropped slightly to 9.29. Even a small change like that can be enough for another series to take the lead – we saw this with the 90-minute first episode of a different anime in May 2023. But as the initial excitement around the surprising debut of Oshi no Ko faded, its position at the top became less secure.
It’s still unclear if the huge popularity of Chainsaw Man will last, or if it’s just a burst of excitement for the new movie and the show’s comeback after a three-year wait. But The Reze Arc isn’t just a hit with anime fans – critics love it too, giving it a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers clearly enjoy it as well, with a 99% audience score.
The film earned almost $9 million at the box office during its opening weekend in the U.S., marking another success for Sony’s Crunchyroll. This follows the recent, incredibly popular theatrical release of another film.
