As a seasoned traveler who has faced my fair share of turbulence and unexpected airline quirks, I can certainly sympathize with Jula Vadini’s experience. Upon hearing about her predicament, I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of being handed a candle mid-flight, causing immediate confusion!
A woman became well-known on TikTok following an incident where she felt endangered when she received a candle during a flight just prior to the aircraft encountering turbulence.
Experiencing a flight is always a special occasion that might spark feelings of apprehension or unease, even among those who feel at ease flying high above the ground. Given this, individuals are constantly brainstorming clever tips to streamline air travel and ensure it’s hassle-free.
During a recent journey from Bogotá San José Del Guaviare, Colombia, content creator Jula Vadini (jula.vadini on the platform) found herself quite perplexed when flight attendants distributed electronic candles to every traveler just prior to the aircraft encountering severe turbulence.
In the face of the bizarre turn of events, Vadini opted to capture the scene on TikTok, keeping the candle within the shot and expressing puzzlement as she surveyed her surroundings, since neither she nor any other patrons had received an explanation for receiving a candle.
The TikTok has garnered over 1.4 million views in just two days and has gone viral on the platform.
In the video just prior to a sudden change in events, Vadini asked, “Is this where we meet our end?” as the plane encountered some rough air due to turbulence.
When the cabin crew started giving instructions (in Spanish), which Vadini couldn’t comprehend, she became “frightened” and “excessively scrutinized every sound,” much like on TikTok.
TikToker discovers reason for the candle after landing safely
She confessed that she believed the candle was a symbol of good fortune and a means for prayer, since they were likely about to experience an accident. Subsequently, she began praying fervently for a successful landing.
Fortunately, the plane landed smoothly amidst those turbulent instances, and it wasn’t until she stepped off the plane that Vadini learned the real purpose of the candles.
Initially, it seemed that the candle wasn’t intended for prayer before the accident, but rather as a symbol to make a wish. In retrospect, I had no clue about this.
In Colombian tradition, the night before December 7th is referred to as ‘Immaculate Conception Eve’ or ‘Little Candles Day’. It’s a religious occasion that commemorates the conception of Jesus in Christian belief.
Vadini made an update to her initial Instagram post, sharing this discovery: “Apparently, this is a traditional day in Colombia on the 7th of December! One candle equals one wish. What a heartwarming custom!
Regardless of the confusion, TikTok viewers supported Vadini, expressing that they too would have responded similarly when given a candle during a flight.
