After almost 20 years, fans of the show Friends can now watch the last episodes of Joey, the short-lived spin-off series. Over the past few weeks, the official Friends YouTube channel has added the final eight episodes, making the entire show available to stream for free on the platform.
As mentioned, this is the first time these episodes have been released. Joey, the show about an aspiring actor trying to succeed in Hollywood, originally aired from 2004 to 2006. The Friends spin-off was cancelled midway through its second season, preventing the final eight episodes from ever being shown on television.
Before it was added to streaming services, fans found it difficult to watch the Friends spinoff, Joey, even episodes that had already aired in the US. Joey wasn’t available on any streaming platforms, and DVDs were rare, only sold in a few countries. The official Friends YouTube channel began posting episodes in March and finally uploaded the series finale on Tuesday.
The show Joey, starring Matt LeBlanc returning as his character from Friends, also featured a talented cast including Jennifer Coolidge, Paulo Costanzo, and Drea de Matteo, known for The Sopranos. Although the first episode attracted a large audience of 18.6 million viewers, the show quickly lost momentum.
Many fans and critics agreed that the show didn’t measure up to the original Friends. As Marc Peyser of Newsweek put it in 2004, “Let’s be honest: Joey is no Friends.”
Ratings for the show Joey started to decline during its first season. It was ultimately canceled after being moved from its original Thursday night slot to Tuesdays, where it couldn’t compete with the popular show American Idol, according to TV Line.
Joey‘s Failure Might Have Had Some Other Factors at Play
Kevin S. Bright, the creator of Friends, believed he knew why the spin-off Joey didn’t succeed. He said shortly after it was cancelled in 2006 that the show’s problems came from changing what made the character of Joey so popular in the first place.
The executive producer of Friends explained that while Joey was known for having many romantic interests, viewers enjoyed watching his adventures. However, the producer felt the character later became too downbeat. “Joey started as a reliable friend, someone you could always depend on,” they told The Age, “but he was later written as someone who struggled with work and dating. He became sad and helpless, and I thought this was a mistake, but my concerns weren’t addressed.”
The entirety of Joey‘s two seasons is now available to watch on YouTube.
