As a seasoned gamer with years of slashing and screaming under my belt, I must admit that the closure of Friday The 13th: The Game has left me feeling like a summer camp counselor who’s just lost their favorite machete to a mysterious lake monster. It was a game that brought endless hours of terror and joy, and it will be sorely missed.
I remember when I first picked up the game back in 2017, fresh off the heels of Dead by Daylight’s success. Friday The 13th: The Game felt like a breath of fresh air, with its unique take on the horror genre and intense multiplayer action. It was a game that made me jump at every turn, and I couldn’t get enough of it.
But like all good things, it came to an end. Licensing issues and lower player counts eventually led to its closure this year, leaving me feeling as empty as the Crystal Lake when Jason isn’t around to terrorize the campers.
However, I take solace in knowing that the creators of Friday The 13th: The Game are moving on to bigger and better things. Gun Interactive is working on a new asymmetrical horror title based on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, while IllFonic is set to release Killer Klowns From Outer Space. I’m excited to see what they come up with next, but it won’t quite replace the thrill of being Jason Voorhees in Friday The 13th: The Game.
As for Jason himself, who knows where he’ll end up? He could very well find a new home in Dead by Daylight or another popular asymmetrical horror game in 2025. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope that he doesn’t take too long to get back in the game – though I can’t help but wonder if he’ll be as effective with a chainsaw as he was with his trusty machete.
In the meantime, I guess I’ll just have to settle for rewatching the classic movies and reminiscing about the good old days of Friday The 13th: The Game. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll start a support group for fans who are feeling the same way I am – “Campers Anonymous.” After all, we can’t let our love for the game die just yet!
On Friday the 13th, the servers for the game “Friday the 13th” will be turned off permanently, just like the developers announced a year ago on this very date. Last December 31st in 2023, the game was also removed from digital storefronts, which means that new players can no longer buy it; instead, the developers are preparing to retire the game by sunsetting it.
Friday the 13th: The Game was debuted by IllFonic and Gun Interactive in 2017, a mere year following the release of fellow horror game Dead by Daylight in the asymmetrical genre. Despite its surge in popularity, the game encountered licensing problems that eventually led to a decline in player numbers, ultimately leading to its shutdown this year.
Though the game Friday the 13th has concluded, its developers are still busy creating other asymmetrical games. Specifically, Gun Interactive is developing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, while IllFonic is working on a game called Killer Klowns From Outer Space.
As a long-time fan of horror games, I must say that the prospect of Jason Voorhees potentially joining Dead by Daylight or another popular asymmetrical horror game is truly exhilarating! Having grown up watching Friday the 13th movies, I’ve always had a soft spot for this iconic slasher. If he does find his way into a new game in 2025, I can only imagine the excitement among fans like myself. Of course, licensing issues could potentially complicate things, but I remain optimistic that they will be resolved favorably. For now, fellow horror enthusiasts and I should keep our fingers crossed and stay tuned for more updates!
