The Remastered Version of Freedom Wars has come as quite a shock in recent announcements. Previously, when recalling games from the PlayStation Vita library, I thought other titles would be transferred to contemporary platforms before considering Sony’s own such as Freedom Wars or Soul Sacrifice. Initially, I anticipated seeing Soul Sacrifice ported first, but my assumptions were proven wrong as developers Dimps and Bandai Namco Entertainment revived Freedom Wars for Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. This week marks its global launch, and I’ve been testing the Steam version while revisiting the PS Vita release to discuss how it performs on the Steam Deck.
Playing Freedom Wars Remastered on Steam Deck was reminiscent of my experiences with God Eater Resurrection and God Eater 2: Rage Burst on PS4. The game appears cleaner and runs smoother, but the differences aren’t immediately apparent until I played the PS Vita version alongside it on both devices. Freedom Wars Remastered is a slight advancement and a small step back, yet it could have done more to distinguish itself. Currently, it resembles an enhanced version of a beloved PS Vita title, but it doesn’t set itself apart from the numerous hunting action games (even compared to actual Monster Hunter games) available on Steam. For those interested in the game and not the specifics of the PC port or differences, I recommend reading James’ full review here.
Freedom Wars Remastered PC port features
9 is supported despite having an 800p option), anti-aliasing toggle, texture filtering options (off, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x), and shadow quality settings (low, medium, high, maximum).
In addition to being playable on PC, Freedom Wars Remastered offers keyboard and mouse control options, which I didn’t get to explore much due to my experience with the Steam version on Steam Deck and ROG Ally. However, they are available with customizable bindings. It’s worth mentioning that while not directly integrated into the game, Steam Input can enhance your playtime in Freedom Wars Remastered. If you’re like me and prefer using a trackpad for aiming or gyro controls, I recommend giving these features a try. They significantly improve the gaming experience when using ranged weapons, although you can still rely on the lock-on feature as well.
Freedom Wars Remastered Steam Deck performance
As a devoted admirer, let me express that Freedom Wars Remastered on Steam Deck is almost flawless, boasting enhanced visuals and an overall smoother gaming experience thanks to additional input options through the paddles or gyro. However, there are some performance concerns I’ve encountered. In single-player mode, it maintains a steady 60fps but struggles with inconsistent frame timing, occasionally dipping into the mid to high 50s. This persisted across various settings on both my Steam Deck and ROG Ally, even affecting the high-performance ROG Ally. It seems that these performance issues might be related to the game or its engine rather than the hardware itself. I’m eager to delve deeper into this matter for a more comprehensive understanding.
On the Steam Deck, Freedom Wars Remastered appears to be quite power-hungry, yet it seems to perform less smoothly than expected even when utilizing around 25-30% of both CPU and GPU resources. In multiplayer mode, particularly at 720p or 800p resolution with the graphics settings maxed out, there were occasional frame rate drops down to the 40s.
Freedom Wars Remastered Steam Deck Gameplay Screenshots
When using the Steam Deck OLED, I found that 60fps in Freedom Wars Remastered doesn’t seem smooth when the screen is set to 90hz. To improve the gameplay experience, consider adjusting your Steam Deck’s screen to 60hz instead if you have an OLED model. However, even at this setting, the frame rate isn’t perfectly stable, and setting it to 55fps (at 55hz) doesn’t feel optimal either. I hope a future update can fix some of these minor issues, as the gameplay is still significantly better than on PS Vita or when playing at 30fps there, despite the slight instability.
Freedom Wars Remastered multiplayer on Steam Deck
Keep in mind that Freedom Wars Remastered employs Easy Anti-Cheat, an anti-cheat system mentioned on its Steam Page. However, after the initial setup, it functions smoothly on the Steam Deck. I even tested playing Freedom Wars Remastered online with a friend over Wi-Fi and wired internet, both using PC and Steam Deck. To our delight, we encountered no connection issues or problems at all – it operates efficiently.
Freedom Wars Remastered Steam Deck recommended settings
In Freedom Wars Remastered on Steam Deck, I haven’t discovered any settings that guarantee a flawless 60fps experience at 100%. However, if you don’t mind occasional dips to around 55fps, you can adjust your settings as follows: Enable texture filtering at 16x, keep anti-aliasing on, and set shadows to medium. I typically opt for low shadows in most games for improved performance, but I didn’t spot a significant difference between medium and low shadows in this game.
If you engage in multiplayer sessions, you might encounter drops to the upper 40s during busy scenes. Should the game receive an update to resolve some of its performance issues, I will be sure to update this information accordingly.
In Freedom Wars Remastered, the on-screen keyboard for text entry functions well, such as when entering passwords, and clear button prompts with a suitable font size are consistently displayed throughout the game. It seems likely that it will receive Steam Deck Verification soon; however, I hope some performance issues can be addressed.
Freedom Wars Remastered ROG Ally performance
After playing Freedom Wars Remastered for approximately five hours each on my Steam Deck OLED and PS Vita, I became interested in examining if performance problems would also persist when using Windows 11. Upon testing the game on the ROG Ally (Z1 Extreme) at its 25W turbo mode for another five hours, I observed similar drops below 60fps while playing at 1080p. Even after lowering settings to minimum and switching to 720p, the frame rate dips were not fully eliminated. It’s worth noting that these are minor problems, but it is troubling that a remastered PS Vita game with no significant visual enhancements encounters such issues on more powerful hardware.
Re-immersing myself into Freedom Wars Remastered on modern handheld devices after initially playing it in 2014 has been an enjoyable trip down memory lane, yet it underscores the significant strides made in the hunting action genre since then. Contemporary consoles and PC offer a plethora of mainline Monster Hunter games, exceptional titles like Wild Hearts, classic games such as Toukiden, and all three God Eater series. While Freedom Wars Remastered does a commendable job at making the original more user-friendly and enhancing gameplay, I can’t help but wish that Dimps had gone further with this revival. Here’s hoping this reboot sparks interest in a potential Freedom Wars 2, as there’s immense potential waiting to be explored!
