Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox Cloud Gaming will likely soon offer a free option – you’ll be able to play games by watching advertisements.
Earlier this month, The Verge reported that Xbox is preparing to test a new, ad-supported cloud gaming plan, with a wider release expected in the coming months. This news followed reports that Halo will be available on PlayStation, prompting The New York Times to confirm the new plan. According to their reporting, a Microsoft representative stated the company is internally testing free access to some games via the cloud, supported by advertisements, as a separate offering from Xbox Game Pass.
The Verge initially provided a detailed look at Microsoft’s plans for Xbox Cloud Gaming, which includes an ad-supported version. Microsoft is currently testing this version with its own employees. Right now, the test allows users to play some games they already own via the cloud, as well as games offered during Free Play Days and classic Xbox Retro titles.
Right now, the ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming plays about two minutes of ads before you can start playing a game. Free sessions are limited to one hour, and you get up to five free hours each month. These details could change when the service officially launches.
Xbox is planning to offer a version of its cloud gaming service with advertisements that will work on PCs, Xbox consoles, handhelds, and through web browsers. Before it’s released to everyone, they’ll test it with a wider group of players. Right now, Xbox’s cloud gaming features are only available to people who subscribe to Game Pass.
