A new update to the popular mod, Diffusion, is now available. Built on the original Half-Life, it was recognized as one of the best mods of 2025 by ModDB users, earning the second-place spot in their annual awards.
This single-player first-person shooter puts you in a new, futuristic world as an experienced SWAT officer who unexpectedly gets caught up in strange experiments. It’s built using the Half-Life engine, but features completely original content – all the maps, characters, enemies, and weapons are new. The gameplay has been updated and improved, blending classic shooting with modern tactical elements.
Even though this project started as a modification for the game Half-Life, it’s now a completely separate experience – effectively a free game you can play on its own.
The new version of the mod (1.1), brings many changes. The most important ones include:
- All voice acting has been replaced with new recordings of much higher quality.
- Graphical elements on many campaign maps have been improved.
- Enemy AI and weapon balance are now enhanced.
- Numerous bug fixes have also been implemented.
Last year, Diffusion really stood out as a delightful surprise. It’s a free game that’s surprisingly well-made – on par with many paid ‘boomer shooters’ you’ll find today. If you haven’t played it yet, it’s absolutely worth checking out.
