Since debuting on Disney+, Freakier Friday has become a big hit with viewers. While the film—a follow-up to the original Freaky Friday—did reasonably well in theaters, it’s found even more fans now that people can stream it at home. This is particularly notable because comedies haven’t been performing well in cinemas lately.

The sequel, Freakier Friday, takes the body swap concept to a new level with four people switching places, truly earning its name. The original film featured Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan swapping bodies, but this time, they both switch with two teenagers: Lohan’s daughter and her future stepdaughter.

The new movie, Freakier Friday, definitely reminds you of the first one, and it’s actually more complex. The original was easy to follow – you just needed to remember that Tess and Anna had switched bodies. But this sequel adds more characters to keep track of: not only Tess and Anna, but also Anna’s daughter, Harper, and her fiancé’s daughter, Lily.

Anna and Harper, and Tess and Lily, unexpectedly swap bodies, leading to hilarious situations. It’s especially fun watching Curtis and Lohan, as an older couple, navigate life in the bodies of younger women. Their fantastic chemistry is still clear, and this body-swap idea provides a lot of funny moments as different generations clash.

While Freakier Friday isn’t quite as hilarious as the original – the first movie was consistently funny, and this one has a few good laughs – it’s still a heartwarming film. Some of the jokes don’t quite hit the mark, but it’s just as good at leaving you feeling positive. You’ll leave the theater with a smile and a warm feeling, much like you did with the first movie.

Will There Be Another Freaky Friday?

If the current pattern continues, we might see a third Freaky Friday movie in a few decades. While Disney hasn’t officially announced plans for a sequel, those involved with the films have been discussing potential ideas.

Director Nisha Ganatra has plans to make a third Freaky Friday movie even more chaotic than the previous ones. She envisions a six-person body swap, and is particularly keen on seeing actors Manny Jacinto and Chad Michael Murray trade places. Given the success of Freakier Friday, she believes another sequel is a logical next step.
