Frankenstein: Why Guillermo del Toro Had To Cut a ‘Beautiful’ 7-Minute Scene

Guillermo del Toro has said a significant scene was cut from his film Frankenstein after James Cameron gave him feedback. Del Toro described the seven-minute scene as visually stunning, but it didn’t make it into the final version of the movie.

James Cameron had Guillermo del Toro cut a long scene from Frankenstein

Guillermo del Toro shared that a crucial choice he made while working on Frankenstein actually came from advice given by James Cameron. Cameron suggested removing a lengthy scene, even though he thought it was well-made. Del Toro took the advice immediately, and a seven-minute scene ended up being cut from the final movie.

At the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro shared that he doesn’t use standard test screenings to gauge his films. Instead, he prefers to show them to a small, trusted group of fellow filmmakers – friends he considers exceptionally talented. This group includes names like Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Rian Johnson, Steven Spielberg, and James Cameron. As del Toro explained, he relies on feedback from about 14 to 16 of his closest, most insightful friends, something he feels fortunate to have.

Guillermo del Toro explained that his creative team relies on honest, direct feedback. He shared that people watch his films and tell him exactly what they think, and everyone agrees to be completely frank. He recalled that James Cameron once pointed out a seven-minute section of a film – which was ultimately cut – saying it was visually stunning but needed to be removed.

The director made it clear he always accepts feedback from this particular group without question. He explained that if someone from the group offers a suggestion, he implements it immediately, stating, “Once you’ve asked people you trust for their opinions, you need to respect them—you can’t dismiss their input.”
