Comic books remain incredibly popular, and fans who’ve followed the DC movies for years are now excited about a fresh, connected universe led by co-CEO James Gunn. The first projects in this new franchise, called Gods and Monsters, all included Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. He’s currently getting in shape for the upcoming DC film, Man of Tomorrow, and is in amazing physical condition.
James Gunn has hinted that the upcoming Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, will feature a team-up between Superman and Lex Luthor to fight a shared villain, and fans are excited to learn more. Meanwhile, actor Joe Manganiello (playing Lex Luthor) has been sharing updates on his training for the role on Instagram, giving us a glimpse of his preparation for filming the sequel.

Joe Manganiello is getting incredibly muscular while preparing to play Deathstroke in the upcoming film. Although he says he’s just started training, he’s already in amazing shape. It’s hard to imagine how much more fit he’ll become, and I definitely wouldn’t want to face him in a fight scene!
While Rick Flag Sr. (played by Joel Grillo) didn’t have a lot of action in the first Superman movie (available on HBO Max), he’s shown off his fighting skills in the series Creature Commandos and Season 2 of Peacemaker. According to recent reports, he may be facing off against someone in the upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow.

HBO Max subscriptions begin at $10.99 per month. It’s the place to stream all things DCU, including shows featuring Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., plus thousands of other movies, series, and documentaries. See the deal here.
Frank Grillo is well-known for his roles in action films, often showcasing his strong physical presence. He’s played memorable villains like Crossbones in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (available on Disney+), battled masked attackers in the Purge series, and appeared in other popular action movies such as Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and Zero Dark Thirty.
Rick Flag Sr. appears in Superman, but his role is primarily focused on political and investigative work rather than physical action. He spends his time managing the fallout from Lex Luthor’s schemes, apprehending Superman, and overseeing the tensions between Boravia and Jarhanpur.

The season finale of Peacemaker raised the stakes, hinting at major developments for the wider DC Universe. After a tough fight with Peacemaker, the villain Flag ended up trapping him in Salvation, a newly established pocket dimension. This dimension is designed to be a prison for metahumans, created as a direct result of their interference with global events, as seen in Superman. This new setup appears to be a key element in future DC projects.
We should get answers to our questions when Man of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 9th, 2027. However, since the film isn’t scheduled for release in 2026, fans will probably need to wait for more details. Hopefully, James Gunn and the team will share some hints about Rick Flag Sr.’s part in the movie soon.
