Francisco San Martin, ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘Jane the Virgin’ Actor, Dies at 39

39-year-old Francisco San Martin, famed for his performances in “Days of Our Lives” and “Jane the Virgin,” passed away last Thursday.

The Los Angeles Coroner’s Office has confirmed that San Martin took his own life. The manner of death, according to their report, was strangulation by means of a ligature.

From 2010 to 2011, San Martin portrayed the role of Dario Hernandez on the lengthy daytime drama “Days of Our Lives”. Across 59 episodes, his character made an initial appearance as a thief but was later unveiled as someone investigating a long-unsolved crime.

Following his initial breakthrough performance, he went on to appear in Steven Soderbergh’s “Behind the Candelabra,” sharing the screen with Matt Damon and Michael Douglas. Subsequently, he starred in 16 episodes of the soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful” and seven episodes of the series “Jane the Virgin,” working alongside Gina Rodriguez. His most recent credit is a short film titled “Dot,” directed by Tiffany Frances.

Originating from Montana, where he spent his childhood years, San Martin initially pursued acting in children’s theater performances. Afterward, he ventured back to Spain during his teenage years, working as a model. He graced numerous Spanish plays and television shows before deciding to return to the United States for professional work.

Camila Banus, known for her role as Dario’s sister Gabi on “Days of Our Lives,” posted a tribute on Instagram stories. She said, “Pepe, words fail me but I love you and may you rest in peace, my friend. I love you so, so, so much. If only I could have told you that more.
