Francesca Archibugi to Direct Sex Trafficking Drama ‘Illusion’ Toplining ‘La Storia’ Star Jasmine Trinca (EXCLUSIVE)

The Italian film director Francesca Archibugi (“La Storia,” “The Hummingbird”) will be at the helm of the sex-trafficking drama titled “Illusion.” In this movie, Jasmine Trinca (“La Storia,” “Supersex”) portrays a courageous judge delving into an intricate prostitution network that allegedly reaches the European parliament.

Filming for a new movie, costing around $8 million, will commence next month in central Italy. This film marks the reunion of director Archibugi and actress Trinca, who starred as the lead in Archibugi’s feminist drama set in the fascist era, “La Storia,” which was Italy’s most-watched TV event of 2023. The production is a collaboration between Italy’s Fandango, RAI Cinema, and Belgium’s Tarantula, titled “Illusion.

Fandango sales is launching pre-sales on “Illusion” at the European Film Market.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Trinca, the renowned Italian actor (pictured), served on the jury at Cannes in 2023. In an upcoming film titled “Illusion,” she takes on the role of Judge Cristina Camponeschi who embarks on a gripping quest to dismantle a prostitution network with connections to Eastern Europe and the European Parliament. The story unfolds when a 16-year-old named Rosa Lazar, described as a Dior supermodel in miniature, is discovered near death in a ditch on the outskirts of Perugia, Italy.

The main characters in “Illusion,” aside from Michele Riondino known for his role as “Young Montalbano,” include Michele as a psychologist, Angelina Andrei portraying Rosa Lazar, and Vittoria Puccini, who starred in “Elisa di Rivombrosa.

Archibugi wrote the screenplay with Italian scribe Francesco Piccolo (“My Brilliant Friend”).

Archibugi describes the film as portraying the resilience of individuals fighting to exist in society. In Rosa’s world, we see Romania – a place that is comforting yet troubled. This is contrasted with Brussels and Strasbourg, symbolizing opulence, authority, but also the harmful elements of her life. Lastly, there’s Perugia: it’s cold, windy, old, yet ultimately protective and offering salvation,” the director explained.

In addition to “La Storia,” the latest movie by Archibugi is titled “The Hummingbird.” This film features Pierfrancesco Favino and Bérénice Bejo, and it premiered at Toronto in 2023. It was distributed broadly through Fandango Sales.
