France’s Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques, responsible for the prestigious César Awards, has decided to step away from X.
On Monday, the Academy chose to publicize their news via a press statement, as they had previously removed their presence from the social media platform owned by Elon Musk.
In a statement, the Cinema Arts and Techniques Academy announced they will be withdrawing from social network X, previously known as Twitter. This move, initiated by the executive body and approved by the Association’s representatives, is an alignment with the Academy’s core values regarding ethics and integrity. The Academy strives to celebrate cinema in all its forms. They champion diverse artistic expressions, irrespective of the creators’ origin or identity, who contribute to film production or promotion.
The academy stated that the social network’s stance, especially due to its head’s opinions, is no longer in line with their core principles.
The Institute of Cinematic Arts and Technology has recently decided to discontinue using X, making it the most recent European film organization to do so. In November, the Berlin International Film Festival declared its intention to withdraw from this platform by year’s end, and in August, Alberto Barbera, the artistic director of the Venice Film Festival, chose to step down.
Over the past week, with the #MeToo movement continuing to gain momentum in France, the César Academy has declared a firm stance against sexual misconduct, vowing to temporarily suspend any individuals who are currently being investigated for such offenses.
If one of our members faces legal action due to violent acts, especially those with sexist or sexual overtones, our Academy has stated that it will temporarily revoke their voting privileges during the ongoing court process. If they are ultimately found guilty and receive a sentence, they may be expelled permanently from the Academy.
The 50th César Awards are set to take place on Feb. 28 at the Olympia in Paris.
