In terms of cinematic action, the golden era of Hong Kong movies is tough to surpass. During the 80s and 90s, many outstanding films in this genre were produced here, and finally, all three installments of the A Better Tomorrow series are making their way to 4K Blu-ray as a collection with plenty of fresh bonus features. Restored by Shout Factory, the A Better Tomorrow Trilogy can now be preordered for $100 prior to its release on November 18. Additionally, Shout Factory is releasing a 4K Blu-ray edition of Hard Boiled on November 4. This Deluxe Edition looks appealing, but it’s worth mentioning that the price has increased from $40 to $65 on Amazon and Walmart. It seems unlikely this price will hold, and you won’t be charged until shipping begins for your preorder.

1986 saw the release of the critically acclaimed movie “A Better Tomorrow,” where Chow Yun-fat portrayed Mark Lee, a police officer torn between his responsibilities and integrity. Mark found himself in a difficult position when Sung Tse-Ho, an influential Triad gangster with whom he shared a bond, asked him to assist in seeking vengeance for the murder of one of Sung’s relatives. This film marked the beginning of director John Woo and Chow Yun-fat’s successful path to Hollywood stardom.
1987 marked the release of A Better Tomorrow 2, where it introduced an unexpected turn of events to warrant its creation – details we won’t reveal for those who haven’t seen the initial film. Similar to its precursor, this movie was packed with extravagant action scenes, intense explosions, and a staggering death toll when characters exhausted their ammunition.
3 decades ago, I found myself immersed in “A Better Tomorrow 3: Love and Death in Saigon,” a prequel to the original film, which unfolded amidst the turbulent final days of the Vietnam War. While the narrative wasn’t unforgettable, the action sequences were nothing short of spectacular.
Interestingly, I learned that John Woo’s initial vision for this movie differed greatly from the one we eventually saw on screen, leading to his departure as director due to creative disagreements with the production team. Over time, Woo’s script evolved into the acclaimed 1990 film “Bullet in the Head.
Speaking of it, another notable addition to the Hong Kong Cinema Classics collection is the high-octane film titled “Hard Boiled”. This film was unleashed in 1992 and has been hailed as one of the greatest action movies ever made, particularly due to its remarkable collaboration between John Woo and Chow Yun-fat. Packed with over-the-top action and irresistible fun, “Hard Boiled” follows a police officer on a mission for vengeance against a ruthless gang of criminals. The ensuing chaos is extreme, the action electrifying, and Chow Yun-fat exudes effortless coolness in every single scene, even during the legendary shootout set in a hospital.

Instead of waiting a few months for the upcoming Blu-rays, consider purchasing The Jet Li Collection instead. Released in July, this collection boasts five of Jet Li’s top movies: Fist of Legend, Tai Chi Master, The Legend 1 + 2, and The Bodyguard from Beijing. All movies are available in both 4K and 1080p, and each comes with bonus features. Plus, the price has been reduced to $107 (originally $130).
Additionally, Ringo Lam’s City on Fire, an acclaimed action movie from 1987, is now available as part of Shout Factory’s 4K Blu-ray collection. You can buy it for just $29 (previously priced at $40) in August.
Moving forward, Shout Factory is set to unveil numerous films over the coming years. The film distributor has recently acquired global rights to the Golden Princess film library, comprising a substantial 156 movies in total. Here’s a glimpse of some other movies and box sets from the Hong Kong Cinema Classics collection that are now available for purchase or pre-order:
By rephrasing the original statement, I aimed to make it more engaging and easier to read by using natural language and providing additional context to help the reader better understand the information.
