Epic Games has stated that a Fortnite emote linked to WWE wrestler and actor John Cena has been removed, potentially for good, due to concerns about its possible association with Nazi imagery. More details are available here. This decision was made after careful consideration. The emote is no longer available in the game.
The Peaceful Hips emote, featured in the popular battle royale game Fortnite, was created through a partnership between James Gunn’s DC series Peacemaker and Epic Games. The emote shows your character playfully rotating their hips, then making alternating “L” shapes with their arms. If you’ve seen Peacemaker, you’ll recognize the dance – it’s performed by John Cena in the opening sequence of the second season. The dance is intentionally clumsy and rigid, designed to be a funny and lighthearted moment, especially considering the character’s typically aggressive nature. But, with the show’s most recent episode, this quirky dance – and the Fortnite emote – has gained a deeper significance.
Light Spoilers for Peacemaker S2, E6
The September 25 episode, titled “Ignorance Is Chris,” reveals to Peacemaker that the alternate dimension he frequently visits is, in fact, a version of America controlled by Nazis. This alternate US is depicted as a purely white, Anglo state, with the stars on the American flag replaced by swastikas. This discovery provides a new understanding of Peacemaker’s dance sequence at the beginning of Season 2; the alternating “L” shapes he forms with his arms are actually meant to represent the swastika.
Following observations from users on X/Twitter, Epic Games has temporarily removed the emote from its store. They are looking into the “creative intentions” of the creator who made it, and it may not be available again for quite some time.
Epic Games announced on X/Twitter on September 28th that they are removing the Peaceful Hips Emote from Fortnite. They explained they are looking into the creative reasoning behind the emote as part of this collaboration. If the emote won’t be returning, they will be giving refunds to players within the next few days. Sorry folks, they said.
The creator of the Peacemaker show, James Gunn, hasn’t spoken publicly about what’s happening. But, as PC Gamer pointed out, Gunn did share news about the collaboration on X/Twitter on September 13th. Given how often he uses social media, he might address Epic Games’ decision soon.
