Gina Carano gained prominence as an actress in both films and television. She became well-known for her role as Cara Dune in the first two seasons of Disney+’s The Mandalorian, but was later fired by Disney after posting controversial statements on social media that drew comparisons between current political and pandemic-related issues and the Holocaust. Since then, Carano hasn’t appeared in any major film or TV projects, but she’s now set to return to acting with a new streaming project.
Gina Carano first became well-known as a mixed martial arts fighter before her acting career took off. She’s still technically under contract with the UFC, and now, after 17 years, she’s returning to the ring. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix will stream her fight against Ronda Rousey on May 18th. The featherweight (145 lbs) match will be held at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
Ronda Rousey shared a statement marking the event, hinting that it had been planned for quite some time. She confirmed she’s partnering with Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), the boxing company owned by Jake Paul, and her opponent is promoting the fight as a major event that people will be talking about for a long time.
I’m so excited to finally share this! I’m going to be facing Gina Carano in what we both believe will be the biggest fight ever seen in women’s combat sports. We’re teaming up with MVP, a promotion that really supports fighters, and Netflix, the biggest streaming service around, to make it happen. This is for every MMA fan out there – those who’ve been with the sport forever, those watching now, and anyone who might become a fan! Stay tuned, because there’s a lot more news coming soon…
Will Fighting Return Spark Gina Carano’s Hollywood Comeback?
Disney+
Gina Carano first became well-known as a mixed martial artist, but she quickly became a movie star, landing many action roles. From 2008 to 2022, she appeared in 17 films and TV shows, including notable parts in Fast & Furious 6 (2013) and Deadpool (2016). This success led to her popular role as Cara Dune, a mercenary turned marshal, in seven episodes of Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian over its first two seasons.
Since a contentious departure from Disney following her role in Star Wars, actress Gina Carano hasn’t appeared in any large-scale Hollywood films. Her only two credited projects since then have been the 2022 film Terror on the Prairie, produced by The Daily Wire, and My Son Hunter, distributed by Breitbart News. Separately, she reached a legal settlement with Disney regarding her firing from The Mandalorian. Disney stated they would consider future collaborations with Carano as part of the settlement.
