Former Sony Exec On The One PlayStation Game He Was Surprised Didn’t Sell Like He Thought It Would

In his farewell conversation with Kinda Funny, former long-serving Sony PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida shared an intriguing tale about a single PlayStation title that underperformed in sales compared to initial expectations during his tenure at the game industry titan.

As a gaming enthusiast, I was taken aback when I learned that Horizon Forbidden West, the follow-up to Horizon Zero Dawn, didn’t quite meet commercial expectations compared to what I had anticipated, given its quality.

As a dedicated gamer, I must admit that I was taken aback by the unit sales for the second Horizon game. You see, I adored the initial Horizon title and it performed remarkably well. Given my high expectations for its sequel in terms of commercial success, I found it surprising that it didn’t sell as many copies as the first one, despite being a larger and equally captivating game.

Back in 2017, I was one of the millions who eagerly welcomed Horizon Zero Dawn into our gaming lives. By early 2022, it had already sold over 20 million copies across PlayStation and PC platforms. Fast forward to May 2023, Sony proudly declared that the entire Horizon series had surpassed an astounding 32.7 million units sold! The impressive figure of 8.4 million sales was attributed solely to Forbidden West, although its PC version wasn’t yet available when this number was announced.

In addition, the Horizon series has ventured into virtual reality through Horizon: Call of the Mountain and family-oriented gaming with Lego Horizon Adventures. It appears that Sony is currently working on a Horizon multiplayer game in the online realm as well.

Beyond gameplay, production for a Horizon film is currently underway, picking up where the halted Netflix TV show left off.

Additionally, during the Kinda Funny interview, Yoshida elaborated on the reasons behind the PlayStation Vita’s demise and his beliefs as to why a Bloodborne remaster might not be in the works.
