If you’re excited about the upcoming Fourth Wing TV series on Prime Video, it’s worth checking out their previous fantasy romance adaptation first. Fantasy romance, often called “romantasy,” has become incredibly popular in recent years, with authors like Rebecca Yarros, Sarah J. Maas, and others gaining huge followings thanks to both traditional publishing and platforms like BookTok.
Hollywood is finally starting to embrace the popular fantasy romance genre, and several big adaptations are now in the works. One of the most anticipated is based on Rebecca Yarros’ hit novel, Fourth Wing, and will be produced by Michael B. Jordan’s company for Amazon MGM Studios. However, progress on the Fourth Wing adaptation is slow, and details are still scarce, so fans may have to be patient.
It’s frustrating that Prime Video canceled “My Lady Jane” before it had a real chance to gain viewers, especially considering how popular fantasy romance is right now – and with the delay of the “Fourth Wing” series. Starring Emily Bader (known from “People We Meet on Vacation”), the show expertly combined passionate romance, a magical uprising, a unique take on history, and characters you genuinely cared about.
My Lady Jane Is The Perfect Fantasy Romance Adaptation
As a total Tudor history buff, I was immediately intrigued by My Lady Jane. It’s based on a true story – Lady Jane Grey, Henry VIII’s grandniece, was briefly queen of England back in 1553, but was overthrown after just nine days and, well, lost her head. But this isn’t your typical historical drama! The story asks a wonderfully weird ‘what if?’ – what if Jane had fallen in love with a man who could… transform into a horse? Seriously, that’s the premise, and I’m completely here for it.
Imagine a world where England is split between ordinary people, called the Verity, and the Ethians – people with the extraordinary ability to shapeshift into animals, but who are hunted because of it. When Jane tries to escape an unwanted marriage, she accidentally gets caught up in a dangerous political scheme and a brewing war between these two groups. Amidst all the chaos, she unexpectedly falls for the captivating Lord Guildford Dudley, who starts as her enemy but becomes her lover.
Although My Lady Jane is funnier than Fourth Wing – largely thanks to the fantastic narration by Oliver Chris – it still has all the elements that make fantasy romance so popular. It’s no surprise it’s received such high praise, earning a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
I was completely captivated by Jane! She’s such a fearless and independent character – I immediately thought she and Violet Sorrengail from Fourth Wing would hit it off. The connection between Bader and Bluemel is electric, and honestly, the romantic scenes are really steamy. What I also appreciated is that the show doesn’t shy away from tough topics like prejudice and the dangers of unchecked power. Overall, My Lady Jane is just eight episodes of pure enjoyment – it’s full of romance, adventure, unexpected twists, and a lot of action. I couldn’t recommend it more!
My Lady Jane Deserved So Much More Than 1 Season
I was really disappointed to hear Prime Video isn’t making a second season of My Lady Jane, especially since it got such great reviews. Honestly, it’s still totally worth watching – the story is fantastic, and the final scene with Jane and Dudley is just beautifully done. I think it might have just been bad timing, you know? All eight episodes dropped at once in June 2024, right after Netflix released the new season of Bridgerton, which is huge. It’s a shame, but I still recommend checking it out!
I think the fact that My Lady Jane came out on Prime Video after Bridgerton really set it up for unfair comparisons. It’s just so hard for any new show to live up to that level of success, honestly! But even though it was cancelled, there was a huge outcry from fans – a petition to save the show got over 120,000 signatures, which just shows how much people loved it. It was really validating to see even George R.R. Martin speak out against Prime’s decision, too!
Everyone should give My Lady Jane a fresh look. It’s not just a typical historical romance – it’s a really well-done fantasy romance, too. With the growing popularity of fantasy romance on TV, My Lady Jane deserves a second chance to shine, and it’s a fantastic example of the genre.
All episodes of My Lady Jane are available to stream now on Prime Video.
