Forget ‘Blade,’ The Best Action-Meets-Horror Comic Book Movie Just Landed on Streaming

Combine a talented director, a story involving Nazis, plenty of action, and a popular comic book – and you get one of the greatest comic book movies of all time. Many fans consider Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy to be superior to films like Blade, V for Vendetta, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (which wasn’t very successful). With fans eagerly hoping for a third movie featuring Ron Perlman, the original Hellboy is now available on a new streaming platform.

Fans can now watch Hellboy on HBO Max. It’s one of several dark fantasy films joining the platform this month, alongside titles like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Based on the popular comic book by Mike Mignola, Hellboy tells the story of a demon infant rescued by the Americans from the Nazis to battle supernatural threats. Director Guillermo del Toro was a huge fan of the comic and created a movie adaptation that’s become a favorite among comic book fans. Here’s what the movie is about:

During the final days of World War II, the Nazis tried to open a gateway to another dimension hoping to turn the tide against the Allies. They only managed to summon a baby demon, who was then saved by Allied soldiers and named Hellboy (played by Ron Perlman). Sixty years later, Hellboy works for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, protecting America from supernatural threats. He’s joined by his teammates: Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), a psychic merman, and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), who can control fire.

Ron Perlman famously played the lead role in Hellboy, becoming the definitive version of the red-skinned hero for many fans. Despite attempts by David Harbour in the 2019 Hellboy reboot and Jack Kesy in the 2024 film Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Perlman remains the actor most associated with the character.

Will ‘Hellboy’ Ever Get the Trilogy Treatment?

Sony Pictures Releasing

Ever since the first Hellboy movie came out in 2004 and gained a dedicated following, fans have been eager for another installment. A sequel, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, arrived in 2008 to positive reviews from both critics and audiences. Despite the film’s success – it earned $168 million worldwide, a significant amount at the time – actor Ron Perlman hasn’t reprised his role as the iconic demon since.

Since the two Hellboy films directed by Guillermo del Toro, there have been two attempts to restart the franchise. However, neither of these new films has managed to capture the same feeling as the original movies or the unique world of Mike Mignola’s comics. As of now, there’s no official word on whether del Toro or Ron Perlman will return to finish the planned Hellboy trilogy. Del Toro is currently preparing a new dark fantasy film inspired by Frankenstein for Netflix, and some fans are hoping he’ll make Hellboy 3 afterward, though that seems unlikely at the moment.
