Just a heads-up – this is going to have big spoilers for the latest episode of For All Mankind! I have to say, the show just gave one of its most important characters a truly powerful moment, and it really resonated with me more than anything else we’ve seen so far. I remember when For All Mankind first came to Apple TV – it was such a fascinating take on history. The premise – that the Soviets beat the US to the moon – completely flipped everything on its head and grabbed my attention immediately.
Even with a minor alteration to historical events, this imaginative sci-fi show presents a believable scenario where NASA and the US government push themselves to achieve breakthroughs faster than their competitors. This increased effort sparks innovation and speeds up the exploration of our solar system.
Throughout the series, Ed Baldwin has been key to achieving important goals. However, in the second episode of For All Mankind season 5, Ed undertakes his most daring and courageous act yet, even though he’s older and battling a life-threatening illness.
Ed Baldwin Gives His Life To Save Lee Jung-Gil In For All Mankind Season 5
Ed Baldwin is involved with the SDM, a group working to defend the rights and liberties of everyday people on Mars. But with Earth governments getting involved, many Martians are now vulnerable and reliant on the Peacekeepers for protection.
Lee Jung-Gil, the first person to land on Mars, is in serious trouble. He’s been accused of murder on the planet, but the evidence doesn’t support the claims. Now, he’s facing unfair deportation and likely execution by his own government without a proper trial. However, Ed and the team at SDM have devised a plan to rescue Lee from detention and move him to a different Martian base where he won’t be sent back to face those charges.
Ed is crucial to the plan, responsible for flying Lee to the new location. But Ed is very sick, and even this quick flight pushes his body too far. The episode concludes with Ed in critical condition, either already dead or on the verge of death.
Ed Baldwin Has Been The Leading Man Since For All Mankind Began
Joel Kinnaman plays Ed Baldwin, who has been the central character in For All Mankind from the start. He twice had the chance to make history by being the first person to land on another planet. Once, he called off the Moon landing because it was too dangerous, and later, he aborted a mission to Mars due to poor visibility.
Ed played a key role in the first missions to the Moon and Mars, being among the very first people to live and work in space. Now, at the end of his incredible career, he’s once again risking everything to help others and pave the way for future generations to build upon his groundbreaking work.
Who Will Fill The Void Left By Ed Baldwin?
Ed’s departure leaves a big gap in the show that needs to be addressed if For All Mankind is going to continue successfully. While characters like Miles Dale and Dev Ayesa are compelling, their complicated personalities make them unsuitable as the story’s new central hero.
Despite the challenges, the Baldwin family offers promising characters to lead the show’s future. Kelly Baldwin, much like her father, is a daring explorer, and her quest to discover life on Titan suggests she’ll be a key figure in the story, both this season and in seasons to come.
Alex Baldwin, the son of Kelly and grandson of Ed, is currently staying at the Mars base, and his storyline suggests he’s being set up as the show’s new leading character. Moving forward, For All Mankind needs to resolve Ed’s story arc in a satisfying way and then clearly define who will take his place as the central figure.
