A football game in Turkey was paused when a ball hit a seagull in mid-flight, causing it to fall to the ground. Luckily, the team captain was able to revive the bird and help it recover.
It’s common for football games to have a little extra time added on for injuries, but it’s incredibly unusual – almost unheard of – for that to be caused by seagulls falling from the sky.
A bizarre incident brought a halt to the Istanbul 1st Amateur League Play-Off Final in Turkey. During the 22nd minute, a powerful goal kick collided with a seagull, causing the game to be temporarily stopped and leaving everyone – players and fans alike – shocked.
Thankfully, the animal was saved, and one player in particular left the field a true hero.
How a seagull brought Turkish cup final to a standstill
The game between Mevlanakapi Guzelhisar and Istanbul Yurdum Spor was proceeding as anticipated, until a long goal kick by Istanbul’s goalkeeper, Muhammet Uyanik, hit something while it was in the air.
Everyone thought it was just an object until the white bird turned out to be a seagull and fell onto the field.
Uyanik immediately noticed the situation and was stunned to see the seagull lying there. Thankfully, his captain, Gani Catan, stepped in and resolved the problem.
Catan found a seagull that had stopped breathing and immediately began performing CPR. Although he hadn’t been formally trained in first aid, he instinctively knew what to do. After two minutes of chest compressions, and with some water and assistance from the club’s medical team, he was able to revive the bird.
When the incident happened, Catan explained that he saw something tumbling down and quickly realized it was a seagull. He rushed over to help, immediately thinking it needed CPR. The bird had collapsed and wasn’t breathing, so he decided to try and revive it.
According to Anadolu Agency, the seagull has been taken to a vet for care. It appears to have seriously injured its wing and can’t fly.
Club captain becomes a hero despite missing out on promotion
Although the goalkeeper, Uyanik, intends to check on the injured bird, it’s Catan who is being celebrated as the real hero of the situation.
His team ultimately lost the game, so Istanbul Yurdum Spor won’t be moving up to a higher league this season. But Catan isn’t worried about that – he just wants to make sure the seagull is okay.
Man, we lost the championship, and it stung, but honestly? After it was all over, I realized something way more important happened. Someone needed help, and we were able to give it. That felt better than any trophy ever could.
