Florence Pugh’s Thunderbolts Finds Streaming Redemption 1 Year Later

I was a little disappointed when Thunderbolts didn’t do as well in theaters, but I’m so glad it’s found an audience on Disney+! Honestly, I think Florence Pugh was the movie. Her character, Yelena Belova, really drove the whole thing, and she’s what brought that team of misfits together. It’s great to see people discovering it now, a year later – it really deserves the attention!

According to FlixPatrol, Thunderbolts is currently number 8 on Disney+’s Top 10 list this week. The movie has been moving around the Top 10 recently, hitting number 10 on January 7th, 8th, and 11th, before rising to number 8 on January 13th.

I just finished watching Thunderbolts, and it’s part of the new wave of Marvel films, alongside Captain America: Brave New World and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. After playing in theaters, all three movies landed on Disney+ for subscribers to enjoy. Thunderbolts hit theaters on May 2, 2025, and then became available to stream on Disney+ on August 27, 2025.

Thunderbolts* Continues Marvel’s Downward Box Office Trend

Ever since the huge success of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Marvel has been working to recapture that level of box office success. However, their latest film, Thunderbolts, didn’t quite achieve that goal. It performed poorly at the box office, earning only $190 million domestically and $382 million worldwide, making it one of the lowest-grossing movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Despite being a Marvel movie, Thunderbolts had one of the lowest box office earnings in the US, surpassing only Black Widow, Thor, Ant-Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, Eternals, The Incredible Hulk, and The Marvels. Many of those films performed lower because they were released early in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history. However, Thunderbolts, Eternals, and The Marvels didn’t have that advantage, making their lower earnings more noteworthy.

Following the massive success of Avengers: Endgame, three new films have been released. Endgame was a huge hit, earning $858 million in the US and $2.8 billion worldwide, making it a tough act to follow. While critics generally liked Thunderbolts, positive reviews didn’t lead to increased ticket sales.

Thunderbolts* Revealed as The New Avengers

Thunderbolts*Avengers: Endgame

The team known as the Thunderbolts—made up of Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, John Walker, Red Guardian, Ghost, and Bob—includes members played by Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman. A scene after the credits showed that this team is in a disagreement with Sam Wilson, also known as Captain America, regarding who has the right to use the name “Avengers.”

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans can now enjoy the latest film, which premiered in theaters on December 18th. Meanwhile, Thunderbolts is currently available to stream on Disney+.
