Ari Aster’s unsettling horror movie is coming back to theaters. It’s also a great opportunity for Florence Pugh’s fans to see her in a very different role than the one she’ll be playing in her upcoming film.
Ari Aster’s Midsommar is coming back to HBO Max on June 1, about six months after it was removed on January 31. It will be joined by other popular films like Hell or High Water, Storm Warning, and A History of Violence.
The Overwhelming (And Deeply Unsettling) Success of Ari Aster’s Midsommar — Explained
Ari Aster, a leading figure in modern horror, wrote and directed Midsommar, which debuted in 2019. The film offered a uniquely unsettling horror experience, notable for its bright and vivid setting. The story centers around a woman struggling with the recent murder of her parents by her sister, who then died by suicide.
Several months later, Dani travels to Sweden with her boyfriend, Christian (played by Jack Reynor), and his friends Mark and Josh (Will Poulter and William Jackson Harper) to experience a midsummer festival with a secluded community. What starts as Dani trying to cope with a difficult past quickly becomes terrifying as the community’s hidden secrets and old traditions are revealed, forcing her to witness increasingly disturbing events.
I was blown away by how well Midsommar did! It only cost around $9 million to make, but it brought in over $48.5 million at the box office. And critics loved it – as of today, it has an 83% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 400 reviews. Interestingly, regular viewers seem to feel a bit differently; the ‘Popcornmeter’ score, based on over 5,000 fan reviews, is currently at 63%.
Where Midsommar Star Florence Pugh is Heading Next on the Silver Screen
Everyone talks about Florence Pugh’s incredible performance as Dani in Midsommar, and rightly so. But what’s really exciting is how different her next roles are going to be. She’s completely switching gears from that intense horror film! And get this – both of her new movies are actually coming out on the same day. People are already joking it’s going to be the next ‘Barbenheimer’ – a huge event for movie fans!
Florence Pugh will be starring in two major films releasing on December 18th: Avengers: Doomsday, where she returns as Yelena Belova, and Dune: Part Three, in which she plays Princess Irulan. Originally, Dune: Part Three was planned for December 11th to avoid competition with another big release, but that change hasn’t taken effect.
Midsommar will be available for streaming on HBO Max beginning June 1.
