In a recent chat on the “Reign with Josh Smith” podcast (as reported by People), I, Florence Pugh, shared that I’m unlikely to take on a role similar to my character in “Midsommar” again. The reason being, I feel that I pushed myself too hard while portraying Dani, a grieving American woman who experiences a psychological collapse during a trip to Sweden’s midsummer festival with her toxic boyfriend. As an actor maturing over the years, I’ve discovered ways to shield myself from such intense experiences, and part of that involves recognizing when a role is just too challenging to revisit.
In some instances, I’ve overextended myself to such an extent that it took a considerable amount of time for me to recover afterwards. For example, during the filming of ‘Midsommar’, I pushed myself so hard that I truly felt like I had gone beyond my limits and suffered greatly as a result.
or
On occasion, I’ve taken on roles where I’ve given too much and paid a heavy price afterwards. For instance, when making ‘Midsommar’, I went well beyond what was comfortable for me, which left me feeling drained and broken for quite some time.
She went on to say, ‘You know, when dealing with such situations, it’s like saying, ‘I can’t do that again, it was too challenging,’ but upon reflection of my performance, I feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. I don’t regret my actions. However, there are certainly aspects about myself that require admiration and respect.’
All the hardships Pugh experienced while filming “Midsommar” were essentially self-imposed. In fact, she holds Ari Aster in high regard, describing him as a peculiar genius with a hidden comedic side. According to her, he has this knack for making you laugh, and once you start laughing at one thing, he’ll keep trying to make you laugh at everything else. Eventually, everyone ends up crying from laughter.
During the filming process, we were in a scorching hot location, using three distinct languages, which I wouldn’t describe as enjoyable all the time. And frankly, it shouldn’t be. After all, creating a movie like that isn’t supposed to be a delightful experience.
During an interview on the “Off Menu” podcast last year, Pugh stated that she had never portrayed a character in such distress until Dani in “Midsommar.” She further expressed, “I went through some really difficult scenarios, ones that perhaps other actors wouldn’t have to experience, but I would simply visualize the most terrible circumstances.
Pugh went on to say, “The material became increasingly strange and challenging with each passing day. I was filling my mind with things that grew darker and more dismal. I believe, without a doubt, that I ended up mistreating myself to achieve that level of performance.
After finishing “Midsommar”, Florence Pugh promptly moved on to the Boston set of Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women”. As she transitioned from one production to another, the Oscar-nominated actress found herself deeply emotional.
Pugh recollected peering out of the plane window, overwhelmed with deep regret as she realized she had left Dani in such an emotional state. It’s peculiar, something she had never experienced before…It seems likely that this guilt stems from psychological factors, reflecting the toll her actions took on herself. However, it felt as though she had abandoned Dani in that field, exposing her to potential harm…almost like she had birthed this character and then left her behind to pursue another film project.
