Five-Year-Old Survival Game Icarus Just Sold Nearly 1 Million Copies In Three Weeks

Steam sales are known for offering good deals, and the recent Winter Sale, from December 18, 2025, to January 5, 2026, was no different. Many games get more sales and players during these events, but one multiplayer game experienced a massive increase in purchases after a significant price reduction.

I was so excited to see Icarus, the survival game made by RocketWerkz, on sale during the Steam Winter Sale! It originally costs $35, but I snagged it for just $3.50 – a crazy 90% off! It first came out in December 2021, and this deal was amazing.

Dean Hall, founder of RocketWerkz, recently shared the sales figures for Icarus. He announced on X (formerly Twitter) that a remarkable 984,000 copies of the game were sold during the recent sale. Additionally, players purchased 243,000 copies of the game’s downloadable content, including two expansions and a pet bundle.

During the recent Steam Winter Sale, ICARUS sold almost a million copies of the base game (984,000) and around 243,000 copies of its downloadable content (DLC).

The recent sales significantly boosted the game’s popularity, leading to a surge in players. SteamDB data shows a peak of 44,120 concurrent players in December 2025, a dramatic increase from the 9,076 players in November. This was the highest number of players playing at the same time since the game first launched in December 2021.

Dean Hall is well-known in the world of online gaming, having created DayZ, a popular 2012 zombie survival game. Players had to stay alive in a world overrun by zombies, but other players often posed just as much of a threat. DayZ began as a modification for the game Arma 2 before becoming a full, independent game.

Steam has revealed its sale schedule extending into May 2026. Next up, in January, are two themed sales: Detective Fest runs from January 12th to 19th, followed by Board Game Fest from January 26th to February 2nd.
