Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 director says sequel “isn’t for critics”

I’ve been following the buzz about the new Five Nights at Freddy’s movie, and honestly, the director, Emma Tammi, seems really confident, even if critics and audiences disagree. She’s made it clear this film is a love letter to us, the fans, and that’s what matters most to her – and to me, too!

The first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie did very well, largely because it captured what fans enjoyed about the game, while also telling a unique story for the big screen.

Released in October 2023, the film quickly became Blumhouse’s most successful movie, earning $300 million globally on a $20 million budget. Viewers also loved it, giving it an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Okay, so the fans loved Five Nights at Freddy’s, but critics? Not so much – they only gave it a 33% score! The people making the next game seem pretty chill about that though, saying if fans and critics disagree again, it won’t bother them at all. It sounds like they’re focusing on what we want, which is awesome!

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 director isn’t worried about the critics

Before the release of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, TopMob spoke with director Emma Tammi about the differing opinions surrounding the film. She confirmed the team was aware of the divide among fans. “Oh yeah, we noticed it,” she said.

It’s always nerve-wracking waiting for reviews, and even longer before you really start seeing what audiences think. But when the audience scores finally started pouring in and they were really high, that’s when we all breathed a sigh of relief – we knew we’d actually pulled it off!

We made this movie for a specific audience, and if they’re enjoying it and understanding the message, then we’ve succeeded in what we aimed to achieve.

I’ve read a lot of the reviews, and I get most of the criticisms. Ultimately, I don’t think this movie was made for critics; you just have to be open to enjoying it for what it is.

The filmmaker doesn’t anticipate critics will love the sequel either, but she’s okay with that. She said if they do, it would be a bonus, but the film was specifically made for a particular audience, and that’s who she’s focused on reaching.

I’m excited for fans of the first movie to see the second one – I think they’ll really love it, maybe even more than the original.

The new movie brings back the original actors, and we’ll also meet Toy Freddy, Toy Chica, and Toy Bonnie on the big screen! Kellen Goff, Megan Fox, and MatPat will be providing the voices for these new characters.

Horror sequel features Scream reunion

Plus, Matthew Lillard will reprise his role as William Afton, and Skeet Ulrich will join the cast as Henry Emily in the upcoming sequel.

Five Nights at Freddy’s features a reunion of the actors who originally played Ghostface in the classic horror film Scream, directed by Wes Craven.

Emma Tammi, the director of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’, was a big fan of the ‘Scream’ reunion happening in the new movie. Original ‘Scream’ stars Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich both appear in ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’.

Tammi described having both Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard on set as amazing. They had already begun reconnecting when Skeet was cast, and their work together immediately brought back memories of their time on the original ‘Scream’ films.

There’s a lot of crossover between fans of those two franchises, and both the Five Nights at Freddy’s and Scream fanbases are incredibly dedicated and large.

I’m incredibly excited about this, and I was even during filming! I’m still feeling that energy now.

The movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will be released in theaters on December 5, 2025. Before then, you can explore the world of Five Nights at Freddy’s through its books and games, check out the YouTubers who appeared in the first movie, and see what other films are currently playing in cinemas.
