Mikey Rijavec, a popular fishing YouTuber, has died. He was found five days after sending a distress call from off the coast of Baja California and disappearing at sea.
Rijavec, who runs the Fish and Sips YouTube channel, was last contacted on November 11th. He sent a distress call from about eight miles out at sea, saying his boat engine was failing. The communication then stopped suddenly, according to NBC News.
It was incredible to see how everyone came together to look for him! The US Coast Guard, the Mexican Navy, so many local boats, even private pilots – they all joined the search. And it really touched me to hear that the Mexican authorities were working hand-in-hand with his family, who were there doing everything they could to help.
A turquoise boat, about 14 feet long, was found overturned on Thursday near where a distress call had come from. Its motor was not with the boat.
Phil Friedman, a friend helping with the search, expressed his worry to NBC San Diego, saying, “It’s just… it’s endless. I can’t imagine what could have happened.”
Mikey’s brother, Gregory, started a GoFundMe that collected almost $47,000 to help with the search. The campaign gained a lot of attention, reaching people far beyond Mikey’s usual online audience of 20,000 subscribers.

YouTuber found dead days after mayday call
The US Coast Guard ended its official search on November 14th, but friends and volunteers didn’t give up and kept searching the beaches.
Gregory announced on Sunday, November 16th, that his brother’s body had been found near San Cristobal.
He shared an update on the GoFundMe page saying it’s time for everyone involved in the search for Mikey to finally rest and find peace. Mikey’s body was found in the water near San Cristobal today. While incredibly difficult, they are thankful to have some closure.
Gregory’s tribute emphasized the overwhelming support the family received throughout the ordeal.

The search for Mikey brought everyone together, with people helping regardless of whether they knew him personally. They recognized that he was someone’s son, brother, friend, or fellow fisherman – simply a person in need. This outpouring of help showed incredible selflessness and love, and that unity continues now.
He added that Mikey lived with intention and positivity.
Mikey lived a full and meaningful life, extending far beyond just the years he was alive. He dedicated himself to sharing positivity and improving the lives of everyone he met, and he consistently succeeded.
Authorities have not yet released details on what caused the accident.
