Amy Landecker Has Been Pitching ‘For Worse’ For a “Decade”
Amy Landecker recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the idea for her first time directing a film had been with her for about ten years before she started writing it. She developed the project with writer Daisy Gardner (known for 30 Rock), but it was Gardner who ultimately convinced Landecker to write the script herself.
I’ve been talking about this idea with friends for about ten years, always believing it could make a great movie. I just needed the right spark to actually start writing. A producer once expressed interest if I ever did write it. I then collaborated with a close writer friend, Daisy Gardner, to develop the concept. Unfortunately, she became too busy to continue when I was ready to write the full script, but she encouraged me to go for it myself. She’s been incredibly supportive and really helped me shape the story’s structure, especially since she’s so skilled at comedy – and this is a comedy, not just a drama about divorce.
Landecker also shared that she hadn’t originally planned to direct her film, For Worse. She received guidance from her Transparent colleagues, Jay Duplass and Gaby Hoffman, and initially asked Duplass to take on the directing role. However, they ultimately persuaded her that she should direct it.
Jay Duplass and Gaby Hoffman were also huge mentors to me. We played siblings on Transparent and remain close friends. We still get together every couple of months for long chats—usually around four hours—to talk about life and our careers. They really pushed me to make, direct, and star in this movie, which was pretty intimidating. Even while working on Transparent, I always had a lot of creative ideas and a natural sense of how things should look. I was even planning to direct an episode if the show had gotten renewed. I’d previously directed some short films for Funny or Die, and I originally asked Jay to direct this movie, but he encouraged me to do it myself, saying I’d be good at it.
