Sanrio’s Hello Kitty Finally Heads to Theaters for Debut Film in July 2028
The studio announced on Instagram that Hello Kitty will star in a movie coming to theaters on July 21, 2028! This will be Hello Kitty’s first time appearing in a major motion picture, and the film promises an adventure that everyone can enjoy.
Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema are making a Hello Kitty movie, directed by Leo Matsuda. The screenplay is currently being written by Dana Fox, who also wrote the script for Wicked. The film is being produced by FlynnPictureCo., with Shelby Thomas managing the project for the company. According to reports, producer Beau Flynn spent nearly ten years negotiating with Sanrio’s founder, Shintaro Tsuji, to secure the rights to make a Hello Kitty movie.
I first spotted Hello Kitty back in 1974 on a line of coin purses, and she quickly became Sanrio’s star character. Over the years, she ended up on just about everything! In the early ’90s, she really took off internationally, becoming hugely popular along with other Sanrio characters like Cinnamoroll and Kuromi. She appeared in animated specials, short TV series, and even full-blown cartoons, plus she showed up in all sorts of collaborations with other famous brands and characters.
Although Hello Kitty remains a well-known figure in pop culture, she isn’t currently Sanrio’s most popular character. Several of her cute companions have actually become more popular recently, and Sanrio is paying attention. The company regularly conducts research to track how well its characters are performing compared to others. According to recent polls, characters like My Melody, Kuromi, Pompompurin, and Cinnamoroll are gaining more traction with fans, and Sanrio expects their popularity to continue increasing in the years ahead.
Hello Kitty arrives in theaters on July 21, 2028.
