In Tokyo, year 198 of the Solar Era, specialized fire brigades battle a strange phenomenon: people suddenly bursting into flames and becoming creatures known as “Infernals.” These Infernals are the first instances of this combustion, but later cases develop the ability to control flames while still appearing human. Shinra Kusakabe, a young man nicknamed “Devil’s Footprints” because he can ignite his feet, joins Special Fire Force Company 8, a team of flame users dedicated to extinguishing Infernals.
