We now know why Nintendo posted that puzzling Pikmin animated short earlier this month! Many people guessed it might announce a new Pikmin game, but Nintendo has revealed it’s actually a trailer for a free update to Pikmin 4. Surprisingly, this update isn’t for a new console like the Switch 2 – it’s a small addition to the 2023 game. We’ll be able to try it out next month when it launches in November.
We know why Nintendo uploaded that unusual animated short, Pikmin 4 gets a free update
This update adds some exciting new features! First, we’re introducing a photo mode, which lets you pause the game, perfectly frame your shots, and decorate them with fun *Pikminthemed stickers. You can use this alongside the new “Relaxed” difficulty mode to get amazing close-up photos of the creatures. In Relaxed mode, creatures won’t attack unless you attack them first, making for a more laid-back experience, and they’ll also be easier to defeat.
Players who find Pikmin 4 a bit too easy will be happy to hear about a new free update! It adds a “Fierce” mode that makes enemies tougher. We can probably expect them to be more aggressive and have more health, making battles longer, but Nintendo hasn’t shared all the details just yet.
A free update is coming to Pikmin 4 and will add collectible Pikmin dressed in fun outfits! The trailer showed off a few – one in a ladybug costume, another with an ice cream cone on its head, and a third sporting a donut – but hints at many more to find. This is a great way for players to revisit the game and enjoy the world again. Plus, you can even transfer these special Pikmin to Pikmin Bloom, the mobile app similar to Pokémon GO.
This is a pleasant surprise! Free updates are rare nowadays, particularly with Nintendo recently releasing the Switch 2 and charging for upgrades to older games. It’s especially noteworthy that Pikmin 4 is receiving this update for free now, instead of as a paid upgrade for the Switch 2. Considering such an upgrade might have cost around $10, this is a much better outcome, as all Nintendo Switch owners can enjoy it, not just those with the new console.
