An animated series based on Final Fantasy IX is once again listed as being in development on the EuroVisual website.
We first heard about a Final Fantasy IX animated series in late December 2025 from a French film and TV industry magazine. Now, the series has been officially listed on the EuroVisual website, and its title has been revealed as Black Mages Legacy.
The show is currently being made as the first season, and will have 10 episodes, each lasting around 22 minutes. This is a bit shorter than originally planned, which was 13 episodes. While there’s no confirmed release date yet, it was previously aiming for a 2028 launch.
The French animated series has had a complicated start. It originally began development at a studio that later closed down. Thankfully, another production company stepped in to continue the project. The show is officially licensed by Square Enix, though they aren’t directly making it. It’s designed for kids aged six to thirteen and is set after the events of the game, focusing on a new generation of Black Mages who are likely the children of Vivi, a popular character from Final Fantasy IX.
You can now play Final Fantasy IX on PlayStation 4 (and PlayStation 5), Xbox One (and Xbox Series X|S), Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Steam, and PC (via the Xbox Store). We’ve also got guides to help you with the game – you can find them here.
You can find the description with the art on the EuroVisual website below:

They currently enjoy a peaceful life in the city of Alexandria, protected by its kind, though sometimes overly curious, residents. However, their tranquility is about to be shattered when Koln finds their sibling, Mel, mysteriously frozen and lifeless at the inn where he works, leading them to wonder if a dark fate connected to their father is finally upon them.
