Nobuo Uematsu, the famous composer for the Final Fantasy games, recently discussed the growing use of artificial intelligence in game development. He believes AI could be helpful for game music, but he doesn’t intend to incorporate it into his own work.
In an interview with JASRAC Magazine, Nobuo Uematsu suggested that AI might be useful for smoothing transitions between sounds in game music. However, he isn’t interested in using AI to *create* entirely new music for games.
He stated he doesn’t plan on using AI, preferring the satisfaction of personally creating things, according to Automaton. He believes part of enjoying art, like music, comes from knowing the artist’s story – something AI simply doesn’t have.
Uematsu pointed out that live music is naturally unpredictable, and it’s those little changes and imperfections that actually make it so enjoyable.
Nobuo Uematsu composes music for Square Enix, and the company’s president, Takashi Kiryu, recently stated they plan to actively integrate AI into their work. In 2024, Kiryu explained that he sees generative AI as a tool that could revolutionize both the content they make and *how* they create it, even impacting areas like programming.
Artificial intelligence is a major talking point in gaming and other fields, sparking both worry and excitement. While some are skeptical, figures like Hideo Kojima encourage adopting AI technologies. Many industry analysts predict a shakeout, where only the strongest AI companies will survive. Interestingly, a recent 2024 survey revealed that most game developers are *already* using AI tools to create games, even with the existing concerns about the technology.
