Good news for fans of Final Fantasy IX! After years of wondering if it would ever happen, an animated adaptation of the game is reportedly back in development. Following the closure of the original studio, a new team is now working on the project, with a planned release in 2028.
An animated series based on Final Fantasy IX was originally announced in 2021, a joint project between Square Enix and Cyber Group Studios. The show generated excitement because it promised traditional 2D animation and a faithful adaptation of the popular medieval fantasy world and characters. However, after Cyber Group Studios closed down in early 2025, the project appeared to be cancelled. Now, surprisingly, it seems to be moving forward again.
Final Fantasy IX Is Coming Back In A New Medium
A recent article in Écran Total magazine reports that the Final Fantasy IX anime series is continuing production with a new partner, the French animation studio Euro Visual. It seems work hasn’t started over completely, but is picking up where the original team left off. The series is currently planned to have 13 episodes, each about 22 minutes long.
Instead of simply re-telling the story of Final Fantasy IX, this new project seems to be a sequel set in the world of Gaia, taking place after the original game’s events. The plot focuses on a new group of characters – Mel, Koln, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc – who are described as the last Black Mages from each of the four continents. They’re living quiet lives in Alexandria until one of them is found frozen, suggesting that their past – and the legacy of their father, the famous Black Mage Vivi – may have serious repercussions.
No Remake News, But Plenty Of New Things Are Coming
Many fans consider Final Fantasy IX to be one of the best games in the entire Final Fantasy series, thanks to its memorable characters, beautiful art style, and touching story. Originally released in 2000 for the PlayStation, it’s stayed popular with ongoing releases on various platforms and will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2025. While a full remake hasn’t happened recently, fans are still hoping for one, and recent collaborations are keeping their enthusiasm alive.

It’s still too early to tell if this new adaptation will become a fan favorite like other Final Fantasy games. However, with a planned release in 2028, a new team working on it, and a story that builds on the original instead of simply retelling it, the Final Fantasy IX anime is surprisingly exciting news for fans as the series enters its third decade.
