Over the weekend, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth set a new concurrent-player record for single-player entries within the franchise on Steam, following its release on PC. This role-playing game, initially launched on PS5 in February 2024, attracted more than 40,000 players who embarked on an adventure with Cloud Strife and his companions.
Eurogamer states that during last year, Final Fantasy XVI had approximately 27,000 simultaneous players on Steam. This figure pales in comparison to the 40,564 players who joined Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Sunday, as tracked by SteamDB. However, it’s important to note that Final Fantasy XIV holds the record for the entire RPG series, boasting over 95,000 concurrent players after the Endwalker expansion in 2021. It’s worth mentioning that Final Fantasy XIV is an MMO, which means it offers online cooperative play as a significant part of its gaming experience.

Just recently, Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, clarified some earlier comments he made regarding Cloud and Aerith’s relationship. Initially, Hamaguchi hinted at a close bond between them that could be likened to siblings, but in a more recent conversation with Automaton, he emphasized that no definitive statements about Cloud’s romantic feelings towards anyone will be released officially.
Moving forward, the last installment of the Final Fantasy VII remake series has reached an important stage, as its storyline is now fully written. Furthermore, there are whispers that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth might be playable on the potential Nintendo Switch 2, given the numerous games speculated for this upcoming platform.
