Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Won’t Say Whether Cloud Like-Likes Aerith

In the realm of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the romantic feelings and relationships of the main character, Cloud, are left for the players to determine, rather than being dictated by Square Enix. This clarification comes from director Naoki Hamaguchi following earlier statements that were misinterpreted as implying a sibling-like dynamic between Cloud and Aerith.

In a chat with Automaton, Hamaguchi explained that fans had misconstrued a quote from an interview with the game director last month by Inverse. He said, “In our creative process, we’ll keep expressing (the dynamics between characters) through our work.” To give an example, he emphasized that no one associated with the project will issue any official declarations about who characters like Cloud or Aerith might be romantically interested in and so forth.

In December, Hamaguchi described Aerith as a character with a “sisterly influence” guiding and motivating Cloud. This interpretation led fans to believe that the director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was weighing in on the popular debate about the love triangle between Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa. However, Hamaguchi has clarified that this was not his intention at all.

Hamaguchi shared with Automaton that he wants fans to understand that the relationships between characters are shown through the game content. Essentially, players have the freedom to choose whom they want Cloud to interact with romantically, even though the full story isn’t finished yet. The third part of the Final Fantasy VII remake series is making significant progress recently.

After being exclusively released for PlayStation 5 in February 2024, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has now made its debut on PC as well. Additionally, there are whispers that this role-playing game will also appear on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. For further details, take a look at TopMob’s review of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
