The director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is not opposed to mods; in fact, he thinks that they have given vitality to the PC gaming market.
It’s interesting that Naoki Hamaguchi recently requested PC gamers to refrain from using inappropriate mods, an appeal that may not yield significant results, especially when comparing it to the response garnered by the developer of Final Fantasy XVI with a similar request.
Despite not having plans to officially back mods, the director of Rebirth made it clear that they value and acknowledge the creative efforts of their players. This was echoed by Hamaguchi during an interview with Automaton Media.
Mods breathe life into the PC market
The director openly acknowledged his personal preference for incorporating mods in PC gaming, recognizing their significant role in enhancing the experience for players. He clarified that his previous statement from December was not a denouncement of using mods, but rather a call for caution to ensure that these modifications don’t alter the original intent of the game developers. In essence, he advised fans to carefully examine the changes that their installed mods may bring about.
Hamaguchi expressed his appreciation for modders and underscored their creations as a significant factor driving growth within the PC gaming industry. He used the popular series like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, particularly renowned for their modding community, as examples. Remarkably, these games continue to draw players even years after their release, such as Skyrim, which has sustained interest over a decade post-launch.
The director additionally didn’t overlook commending the rapid pace at which mod creators produce their work, contrasted with developers. It’s worth noting that modders often have more flexibility and tolerance – a buggy or game-disrupting mod doesn’t cause as much fuss as a similar issue in an official update. However, Hamaguchi finds the swiftness at which mods emerge one of the factors that makes the PC gaming market intriguing for him.
So far, in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the modders haven’t made many significant errors, but they’ve established a strong base to build upon.
