Final Fantasy 7, 8, And 9 Are Finally Getting Physical Switch Releases In America

As a huge Final Fantasy fan, I’m so excited to finally see the physical versions of Final Fantasy VII & VIII Remastered: Twin Pack and Final Fantasy IX coming to North America on the Switch! We’ve been waiting a while – these launched in Japan and Europe years ago, and up until now, US fans like me could only get them digitally. Sure, you *could* import them, but it’s always easier to just buy them here. They’re launching on December 9th, and preorders are already up on Amazon for $40 each. There aren’t any preorder bonuses announced yet, but honestly, physical copies of these games on Switch sell out fast, so I’m grabbing mine as soon as possible!

These three games capture the feel of the classic PlayStation RPGs, but with updated HD graphics and sharper visuals. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered has noticeably more detailed character models, though they maintain the original art style and use the same animations, so it’s an evolution rather than a complete overhaul. All three titles also include optional features like the ability to disable random battles or make your characters unbeatable. While currently available on Switch, they will also be playable on the new Switch 2 console.

Now, Switch owners can collect physical copies of almost every main Final Fantasy game, along with some popular spin-offs! The recent release of the Final Fantasy VII & VIII Remastered: Twin Pack and Final Fantasy IX adds to the existing Final Fantasy I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition, which is currently on sale for $69 (originally $75) on Switch, and even cheaper at $53 on PlayStation 4. These pixel remasters keep the classic 2D gameplay of the original NES and SNES games, but feature updated pixel art—much better than the mobile versions—plus options like choosing between original or orchestrated soundtracks, adjusting battle speed and difficulty, and more.

Later in the series, you can find Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster, which bundles together Final Fantasy X and its sequel, Final Fantasy X-2. These updated versions have improved graphics, beautiful orchestrated music, and all the extra content originally released in the International Editions of both games. That includes the bonus game FFX-2: Last Mission, a unique roguelike dungeon experience. The collection also features the CG short film Final Fantasy X: Eternal Calm, which connects the stories of X and X-2, and the audio drama Final Fantasy X: Will. Currently, the Switch version is available for only $25, down from its original price of $50.

Final Fantasy XII is now available on Nintendo Switch as Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. This updated version of the classic PlayStation 2 game features improved graphics, a remastered soundtrack, and adjustable battle speed. It also includes content and gameplay improvements originally found in the international version of the PS2 game, like a fantastic new Job System that lets you customize your characters in exciting ways. You can get it on Switch for just $25, down from $50. Both Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD are currently being sold directly by Amazon, suggesting Square Enix has recently reprinted them – previously, they were only available through other sellers. It’s a great deal, as the digital versions on the eShop still cost $50 each.

Final Fantasy XII takes place in Ivalice, a world originally featured in the popular game Final Fantasy Tactics, which recently received a beautiful remaster called Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. This remaster lets you choose between the classic PlayStation 1 look or a fully updated version with improved graphics, voice acting, and a redesigned interface. A special physical copy for the Nintendo Switch is available on Amazon for $50, including a fold-out poster and a free upgrade to the game on the next Nintendo console.

Currently, Final Fantasy XI Online, XIV Online, the XIII trilogy, XV, and XVI are the only main numbered Final Fantasy games not available on Nintendo handhelds. We expect most of these to eventually come to the Switch 2, with the exception of FFXI Online, which is an older PC game. If you want to play something like Final Fantasy XV on a Nintendo handheld, a mobile version is available on the eShop – it’s a simplified, episodic retelling with a different art style. The eShop also offers spin-off titles such as World of Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles HD, and Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon.

Despite some concerns, the Nintendo Switch 2 will still get several major Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade is launching on January 22, 2026, and is available for preorder at Amazon for $50. If you preorder now, you’ll receive bonus items like a Magic The Gathering X Final Fantasy booster pack and extra in-game content. You can find more details in our preorder guide. Plus, Square Enix has confirmed that both Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the concluding game in the Remake series will also be released on the Switch 2 at a later date.
