‘Final Destination’ Is Back In First ‘Bloodlines’ Trailer

Many extended movie series often revolve around a specific character, such as Batman, Superman, Harry Potter, Freddy Krueger, James Bond, Luke Skywalker and his companions, Indiana Jones, and others like them.

Final Destination is among a small number of film series I can recall that doesn’t rely on established characters or continuous narratives featuring numerous characters across different time periods. Instead, it revolves around an unusual theme: People who somehow manage to evade imminent death but end up meeting their demise in intricate and seemingly improbable ways, making the contraptions devised by Rube Goldberg appear simple by comparison.

The idea is perpetually replenishable as it doesn’t depend on specific characters who usually meet their end in each fresh production. Introduce new faces, devise creative methods for their demise, and you’re all set to start filming.

In summary: The sixth installment of the series is called Final Destination Bloodlines. Its title seems to imply a link to characters from previous films, suggesting that death through gruesome means could be inherited. However, what truly attracts viewers isn’t this supposed connection; instead, they are drawn in by the spectacle of tattoo artists being sucked up by ceiling fans.

Check out the first trailer for the film below:

The recently announced “Bloodlines” movie is the first fresh installment in the “Final Destination” franchise since 14 years have passed, with the original “Final Destination” debuting back in 2000 under the direction of James Wong and a screenplay by James Wong, Glen Morgan, and Jeffrey Reddick. The plot for this new film was jointly penned by Jon Watts, who is known for his work on the “Spider-Man” series.

Here is the new Final Destination’s official synopsis:

In the latest installment of New Line Cinema’s grizzly successful franchise, “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” we journey back to the roots of Death’s warped sense of fairness. College student Stefanie, haunted by a repeated nightmarish vision, returns home in search of the individual who might be able to halt the cycle and rescue her family from the gruesome fate that seems destined for them all.

Final Destination Bloodlines is scheduled to open in theaters and IMAX on May 16.

The Most Anticipated Movies of 2025

Wolf Man

Title Date: January 17

Previously, Universal attempted a reboot of “The Wolf Man” (or “The Wolfman”), but it ended up being a visually appealing drowsiness. (Apologies to Rick Baker for your dedicated efforts.) However, this new version boasts Leigh Whannell, a gifted writer and director who demonstrated with his 2020 adaptation of “The Invisible Man” that he excels at updating classic Universal monsters with modern fright elements. In Whannell’s interpretation of “The Wolf Man”, Christopher Abbott takes on the role, undergoing transformation following an encounter with a werewolf in the woods near his ancestral home. Given the intellectual depth Whannell brought to “The Invisible Man”, it’s clear that there’s much more to this story than the simple premise might suggest.

Dog Man

Title Date: January 31

If you’re a parent with elementary school-aged children, you’re likely familiar with “Dog Man,” the wildly popular graphic novel series from the creative mind of Dav Pilkey, best known for his work on “Captain Underpants.” This series takes aim at science-fiction and superhero tropes while keeping kids (and their childish dads, like myself) entertained with its crude humor. Remarkably, amidst all the silliness, these books also manage to convey a surprising amount of warmth.

Capturing the unique tone of “Dog Man” could be challenging, but based on the trailer for the upcoming movie, it seems they’ve managed to hit the mark, at least according to my two kids (and their childish dad).

Captain America: Brave New World

2025 promises to be an action-packed year for Marvel fans, with their lineup significantly more robust than the solitary release they had in 2024 (the much-anticipated dual premiere of Deadpool and Wolverine). Among the three upcoming titles, one that stands out is Captain America: Brave New World, marking the debut of Anthony Mackie as our new Captain America within the Phase Five saga of their cinematic universe.

This movie holds a unique allure for several reasons. Firstly, it introduces the first feature film appearance of Mackie’s Captain America. Secondly, it welcomes back some cherished characters from The Incredible Hulk after a 15-year hiatus, including Betty Ross and The Leader. Last but not least, it provides an exciting opportunity to witness the legendary Harrison Ford transform into the enraged titan, the Red Hulk. As a movie critic, I can hardly wait to see how these elements blend together on the big screen!

Mickey 17

Title Release: March 7th

Warner Bros. has repeatedly adjusted the release date for Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated follow-up to “Parasite”. Originally slated for last year in March, it was then moved to January, followed by April, and now it’s set for this coming March. Let’s hope this schedule sticks! I’m eagerly waiting to see how Bong Joon-ho utilizes his Best Picture Oscar win with “Parasite”, particularly with the involvement of Robert Pattinson as a character in a dystopian future who consents to be endlessly cloned upon death, only to encounter one of his duplicates.

Black Bag

Black Bag (Release Date: March 14)

Steven Soderbergh, in collaboration with screenwriter David Koepp following their recent projects “Kimi” (2022) and “Presence” (January 2023), brings us the espionage thriller “Black Bag.” The film stars Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender as a secretive couple whose bond is put to the test when Blanchett’s character faces treason allegations. With undertones reminiscent of “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” this movie promises a more polished, gritty take on their tale. We can’t wait to see it!

Sinners

In the timeframe between “Creed” and “Black Panther,” Ryan Coogler has helmed some of the most outstanding franchise films this century has seen. It’s intriguing to witness him delve into something fresh, as he reunites with Michael B. Jordan for their fifth collaboration within his directorial projects thus far. The specifics of the storyline remain undisclosed at this point, but it’s known that Warner Bros. secured the project following a fierce studio bidding war. This period horror film, rumored to include vampires, is said to be Coogler and Jordan’s next venture.

The Accountant 2

Title Release: April 25

After nearly a decade, the beloved CPA-turned-hitman, and everyone’s go-to movie for Wednesday nights on TNT, is making a comeback! That’s right, the long-awaited sequel to the gripping 2016 action thriller “The Accountant” has finally arrived. Starring Ben Affleck once again, alongside director Gavin O’Connor and co-stars Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. The specifics of the plot might not matter much to us, but we’re confident that audiences will embrace it wholeheartedly. Get ready for a barrage of accounting puns!

The release date is April 25. After nearly ten years, the adored accountant-turned-assassin, and everyone’s favorite TNT Wednesday night watch, has returned! This means that the anticipated sequel to the captivating 2016 action thriller “The Accountant” is now available, featuring Ben Affleck in his role once more, as well as director Gavin O’Connor and co-stars Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson. While the plot details aren’t important to us, we believe that the audience will appreciate it greatly. Prepare yourselves for a plethora of accounting humor!)

Lilo & Stitch

Title Date: May 23

Apologies if you’ve grown a bit tired of Disney’s constant stream of live-action remakes, especially after some less-than-stellar ones lately. However, Lilo & Stitch could buck this trend. The story – an alien causes trouble on Earth and befriends a solitary Hawaiian girl – seems more suitable for live-action compared to, say, retelling a Shakespearean tragedy featuring jungle animals. Additionally, the remake is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, who previously created Marcel the Shell With Shoes On. Here’s hoping he infuses fresh ideas into the material. And let’s face it, who doesn’t enjoy Stitch? He’s quite the mischievous character!

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

Mission Impossible 8 – The Final Reckoning (Release Date: May 23)

Once more, it’s up to Tom Cruise to potentially rescue both the world and the summer movie season. In this eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible series (originally announced as the second part of the seventh Mission: Impossible), Ethan Hunt finds himself in a race against time to prevent global disaster while executing an array of jaw-dropping stunts.

The title implies that this might be the end of this fantastic franchise, considering Tom Cruise’s age (he’s currently 62 years old). However, if it turns out to be another box office blockbuster, I wouldn’t rule out the idea that ‘The Final Reckoning’ won’t be so final in the future.

Karate Kid: Legends

Title Date: May 30

There’s a chance this new release might give me a karate kick! When a Karate Kid movie disappoints, it really disappoints. But when they’re good, they’re fantastic. And it’s intriguing to revive the film series with a sequel that features Ralph Macchio, the original Karate Kid, stepping into the shoes of Mr. Miyagi, alongside Jackie Chan reprising his role as a character reminiscent of Miyagi from the 2010 Karate Kid reboot. Will Karate Kid: Legends reach the same heights as the first movie or the early seasons of Cobra Kai? If they strive for greatness in the name of love… it’s conceivable. (The action in the trailer looks promising indeed.)

28 Years Later

Title Date: June 20th

The creative minds behind the film “28 Days Later,” specifically director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, are returning with a sequel titled “28 Years Later.” Although it’s arriving slightly earlier than expected (the first movie hit theaters 23 years ago), given the current state of the world, it seems understandable. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes are set to take on leading roles, while original franchise protagonist Cillian Murphy is rumored to make an appearance. Furthermore, expect a horde of swift zombies to strike terror once more into our hearts! I can hardly wait to be scared senseless all over again.

F1

Release Date: June 27
Although I’m not very knowledgeable about Formula One racing, I am aware that this F1 movie was directed by Joseph Kosinski. His dynamic style in aerial combat sequences significantly enhanced the action of Top Gun: Maverick, surpassing the original film. Given this, a racing movie directed by Kosinski (with Brad Pitt portraying a retired driver who returns to coach a promising newcomer) seems quite promising.

Superman

Title Date: July 11

If you had doubts about James Gunn, the director of “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Suicide Squad,” creating a genuine Superman film, that fantastic recent trailer might have convinced you otherwise. David Corenswet is now portraying the Man of Steel, facing off against a new Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and longing for a new Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan). Although we’ve seen these characters on the big screen numerous times, what excites us most about this movie is Krypto, a super dog character we haven’t encountered before. This adorable canine seems destined to be a standout scene-stealer in the film.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

In July, the superhero movie landscape will be abuzz with excitement as both Marvel and DC unveil fresh adaptations of their iconic franchises. Two weeks following the release of “Superman”, Marvel is set to introduce its first MCU “Fantastic Four”. This film stars Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Thing. Notably, “First Steps” deviates slightly from Marvel’s usual fare, as it also serves as a period piece, set in an alternative 1960s reminiscent of the one that marked the beginning of the Fantastic Four in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s original comic series.

Naked Gun

Regarding the release date, it’s August 1st. To me, nothing in the comedy world is more sacred than “The Naked Gun” series, the side-splitting police parodies by David Zucker and the ZAZ team, featuring Leslie Nielsen as the clumsy detective Frank Drebin. A new adaptation without those individuals might not sound appealing. That is, until you learn that this fresh take is helmed by Akiva Schaffer of the Lonely Island (and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping”) and stars Liam Neeson as the updated Drebin. In that case, it seems like a brilliant idea.

Wicked: For Good

As a movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on the upcoming release of “Wicked” on November 21. While the second act may not boast as strong songs as the first, with no “Popular” or “Defying Gravity,” the intrigue surrounding Elphaba, Glinda, and the Wizard of Oz is undeniable, given the success of the initial film. I can’t help but be curious to see how their stories unfold further!

Avatar: Fire and Ash

Title Date: December 19

Indeed, the next installment of ‘Avatar’ is on its way. This third film in a potential series could see up to five (or six, or ten, or forty?) more films exploring new parts of Pandora and introducing a new Na’vi tribe, the “Ash People.” (Perhaps Bruce Campbell will lend his motion capture skills to one of these characters.) As always, expect visionary writer/director James Cameron to deliver breathtaking visuals, thrilling action, captivating characters, and, of course, some rather over-the-top font designs.

Marty Supreme

The Safdie brothers, who created the outstanding comic thriller “Uncut Gems” in 2019, have plans for separate films set to release in 2025. Benny Safdie will make his directorial debut with a biopic titled “The Smashing Machine,” featuring Dwayne Johnson as MMA legend Mark Kerr. On the other hand, Josh Safdie is working on “Marty Supreme,” a movie starring Timothée Chalamet as a ping pong champion. With two exciting sports movies from the Safdies in one year, 2025 promises to be an intriguing time!

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

I eagerly anticipate solving mysteries alongside Benoit Blanc once more, as his third adventure graces Netflix screens later this year – if you’re sharp-eyed like him, you might even catch a glimpse of the release date! This time around, an illustrious lineup of suspects including Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Josh O’Connor, Andrew Scott, Mila Kunis, and Glenn Close are under scrutiny. The core mystery remains shrouded in secrecy for now, but the title hints at a tune from U2’s “Pop” album, suggesting that perhaps a dancefloor-related crime unfolds this time. Could someone meet their untimely end on a disco floor? Only time will tell!

Frankenstein

TBA (on Netflix) – Guillermo del Toro’s Long-Awaited Adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”

Delve into the world of Netflix, where they are set to unveil Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”. Del Toro has been eager to bring this horror classic to life for over a decade, and it’s Netflix that finally made it a reality. Oscar Isaac takes on the role of Dr. Frankenstein, while Jacob Elordi from “Euphoria” and “Saltburn” steps into the role of the monster. Buckle up for a spooktacular ride!
