As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for European cinema, I must say that the cast of “Smilla’s Sense of Snow” has me utterly thrilled! The series boasts an impressive ensemble of talented actors, each bringing their unique charm and expertise to the table.

Powerhouse producer Constantin Film has revealed the star-studded lineup for their upcoming crime-drama series “Smilla’s Sense of Snow,” along with some exclusive sneak peeks into the show.

The show’s main actors are Filippa Coster-Waldau, Elyas M’Barek, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. Additionally, Morten Suurballe, Amanda Collin, Set Sjöstrand, and Alexandre Willaume are also part of the cast.

This series is helmed by BAFTA-winning director Amma Asante, who has also co-created it along with Clive Bradley. It’s based on the critically acclaimed novel penned by Peter Hoeg, which was previously brought to the big screen as a film in 1997, directed by Bille August and featuring Julia Ormond.

The story unfolds in Copenhagen of the year 2040, where Smilla Jaspersen resides amidst a watchful state, grappling with the impending energy crisis looming overhead. Living a solitary life, she keeps herself detached from others until she encounters a young Inuit boy who manages to touch her heart. Tragedy strikes when the boy meets an untimely and enigmatic death. Eager to uncover the truth behind his demise, Smilla embarks on a quest for answers.

Her quest for solutions takes her to the chilly landscapes of Greenland, directly into the heart of treacherous political intrigue. The unique talents of Smilla unlock the truth – not just about the boy, but also about her personal identity.

2022 saw Natalie Coster-Waldau, known for her role as Smilla, make a significant mark on the acting scene. She graced two main roles in DR’s youth series “Salsa,” a show that garnered critical acclaim for its daring and authentic portrayal. In the same year, she headlined Viaplay’s original series “Where Were You.

M’Barek, renowned German film actor, makes his debut as the main character in an international production for the very first time.

He experienced extraordinary success through his leading parts in “Turkish for Beginners” (2012) and the “Fuck You Goehte” series (2013, 2015, 2017), which were viewed by over 25 million cinema-goers. Additionally, he delivered critically praised performances in films like the political thriller “The Collini Case” (2019) and “Nightlife” (2020), and the box-office sensation “Das Perfekte Geheimnis” (2019).

In 2023, he received a nomination for the Bambi award in the Best Actor category, recognition for his performance in Michael Bully Herbig’s political satire movie titled “A Thousand Lines.

I had the pleasure of lending my voice to “Paddington” in its eponymous film series, and the latest installment, “Paddington in Peru,” hit theaters just a month ago.

Actor Lloyd-Hughes is set to appear in the upcoming Netflix series “Thursday Murder Club,” directed by Chris Columbus. His recent role was in the Hulu mini-series “We Were the Lucky Ones,” which was based on a New York Times bestseller.

He has appeared on various television shows such as BBC’s “Marriage,” Amazon Prime’s “Mammals,” AMC’s “Ragdoll,” ITV’s “Archie,” a joint production between BBC and Amazon called “The Pale Horse,” Netflix’s “The English Game,” BBC’s “Killing Eve,” and a collaboration between Channel 4 and PBS titled “Indian Summers.” His film roles include “The Inbetweeners,” “Chevalier” produced by Searchlight Pictures, and “Now You See Me 2” under Lionsgate.

The film ‘Smilla’s Sense of Snow’ is a collaborative effort between Constantin Films, Viaplay, ARD Degeto Film, Baltic Film Services, and Netflix for German-speaking regions. It is also associated with ITV Studios for its distribution.

In addition to Asante, Oliver Berben, Robert Kulzer, Pipaluk K. Jørgensen, and Tina Hastings are fellow executive producers for the production. Alicia Remirez serves as the show’s producer.
