As an avid enthusiast of international television productions, I am utterly thrilled about the strategic shift by Yes Studios towards acquiring premium titles like the gripping Icelandic crime series “Haze.” Sigurjón Kjartansson, the mastermind behind this enticing project, has a remarkable track record of co-writing and executive producing some of Iceland’s most successful dramas. His ability to assemble top-tier creative teams, such as the one for “Haze,” is nothing short of impressive.
Leading the charge for a fresh expansion plan, Yes Studios from Israel has acquired “Haze”, an enticing Icelandic crime drama. This gripping series was developed and crafted by Sigurjón Kjartansson, known for his work on “Trapped” and “Katla”.
The eight-episode series features Jóhannes Haukur Johannesson, who has previously acted in shows such as “Succession” and “Game of Thrones.
Made by Kjartansson’s banner S800, the production titled “Haze” has been contracted by the Icelandic broadcasting service RUV. Filming is set to start this coming summer with a projected release date in 2026.
Yes Studios has secured distribution rights worldwide (except in Benelux, which is represented by Lumiere) and also owns the rights for the scripted format of the series. The company will officially debut the series to potential buyers during next week’s Content London event, where it is anticipated to initiate pre-sales.
Earlier, Kjartansson collaborated on scriptwriting and served as executive producer for some of Iceland’s most successful series, “Trapped” and “Katla,” led by Baltasar Kormákur. For the upcoming production, “Haze,” he has gathered an exceptional creative team. This team includes producer Erlinger Jack Gudmundsson (“Operation Napoleon,” “The Minister”), scriptwriters Gagga Jonsdottir (“Trapped”) and David Mar Stefansson (“Trapped,” “Gangs of London”), and director Óskar Thor Axelsson (“Stella Blomkvist,” “Riviera”).
In contemporary Iceland, “Haze” is an engaging international crime drama that unfolds amidst the drug world, delving into the hypocrisy and corruption at the pinnacle of authority. The narrative revolves around three friends from diverse upbringings who lived in a small Icelandic town but diverged after their early twenties. Now in their forties, one is the head of a major European pharmaceutical company, another is a doctor, and the third is a drug dealer. As a long-buried secret from their shared past resurfaces, fate seems to draw them back together, with potentially life-altering repercussions for each character.
Haze” represents the initial international drama on Yes Studios’ roster, showcasing their strategic move to procure high-quality productions to augment their existing lineup of popular Israeli dramas, comedies, and documentaries such as “Your Honor”, “Night Therapy”, “Fauda”, “Shtisel”, “The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem”, “Bloody Murray”, “Significant Other” and “The Lost City: 101 Days in Captivity”.
Kjartansson expressed that his initial concept for “Haze” was to depict the blurred line between legitimate pharmaceutical trade and the illicit activities of the underworld. In regards to his first project with Yes Studios, he commended their extensive background in the global television industry.
Sharon Levi, director of Yes Studios, mentioned that the company has been contemplating broadening their collection to encompass international productions for a while now. However, they’ve been on the lookout for the perfect fit – a piece that not only resonates with them but also aligns with the high-quality, carefully curated content they currently showcase.
In my opinion, “Haze” checks off every essential element and then some. It’s an exceptionally gripping modern-day thriller that skillfully explores the classic David versus Goliath narrative. Moreover, it boasts a highly competent and gifted cast who are already on board with this project.
Levi mentioned that the banner is actively seeking more international scripted projects and will be holding discussions in London. She added that their proficient team has worked across various genres such as crime dramas, political thrillers, family epics, romantic comedies, and science fiction. They are accustomed to collaborating closely with creators and producers to help shows move from development to financing and ultimately secure the perfect buyers.
For many years, Yes Studios has collaborated with global television networks and streaming platforms such as Netflix and HBO Max. Some of its successful scripted series have been reworked for American audiences by Showtime, Amazon Prime Video, and TF1 in France, Sony LIV in India, ENA in South Korea, and ITV in the United Kingdom, among other international broadcasters.
