Generative AI is causing a stir in video games, but the debate is particularly heated when it comes to artwork. Currently, the new trailer for the fighting game Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is facing accusations of using AI-generated art. Fans are scrutinizing the trailer, pointing out inconsistent character designs and suspect visual details. A key piece of evidence, according to viewers, is a brief shot of the villain Geese Howard, who seems to be missing a foot.
People have also noticed some odd details in the game’s promotional material. For example, the motorcycle Blue Mary rides is missing parts and isn’t even the same model she usually uses. Additionally, Kim Jae Hoon’s outfits appear different depending on whether you’re watching a cutscene or playing the game. We’ve contacted the game developer, SNK, for more information about the trailer and will share any updates we receive.
I’ve been hearing some buzz about Fatal Fury potentially using AI in its development, and honestly, it wouldn’t totally surprise me. We already know Activision used AI tools for the next Call of Duty game, though they say people are still in charge of the creative side of things. There’s also a lot of talk about AI-generated art showing up in the next Battlefield. Things got pretty serious with another game, Clair Obscur, though – they actually had to take back some awards because the developers admitted to using AI-created assets. It’s definitely becoming a bigger topic in gaming!
Larian Studios, the team behind Baldur’s Gate 3, recently faced criticism after admitting they were testing AI tools to help create early concept art. Studio head Swen Vincke responded by saying they won’t use AI-generated images at all when developing concept art for their next game, Divinity.
