Well-known director Justin Lin is trying something different with his latest movie. Last Days recently released a new trailer, giving viewers a look at the film’s real-life story, which has sparked some debate.
As a huge cinema fan, I’m really intrigued by Last Days. It tells the story of John Allen Chau, played by Sky Yang, and his incredibly risky journey to North Sentinel Island. He was on a mission to share his faith with the tribe who live there, completely cut off from the outside world. The film follows him as he attempts this, and a detective is trying to intervene before anything bad happens to either Chau or the Sentinelese people. It’s actually based on the true story of the Christian missionary who tragically lost his life in 2018 while trying to reach the self-isolated Sentinelese. The new trailer really highlights just how difficult and harrowing Chau’s mission was. I’m definitely adding this to my watchlist.
The video starts with Chau reaching the apparently deserted island and calling out to try and get someone’s attention. The situation quickly shifts as concern for Chau grows, with news surfacing that he’s traveling to North Sentinel Island. “It’s the Mount Everest of the missionary world,” a friend advises Chau. “Start with something smaller.”
“I’m not aiming low,” Chau replies with a smile. “I’m going for something huge.” The trailer then cuts to footage of Chau’s rigorous preparation for this incredibly difficult task, and we hear someone cautioning him: “You should understand the challenges you’ll face.”
One of the officers involved in the search for John Allen Chau shared a touching observation about the Sentinelese people and the difficulties they experience. She stated with strong emotion, “They simply want to maintain their way of life, but the outside world seems intent on reaching them and disrupting it.” She emphasized, “This isn’t a matter of religion.”
Last Days first premiered earlier this year. Vertical has acquired the rights to distribute the film in North America, and it will be shown in theaters exclusively starting on Oct. 24. The film features Yang, as well as other stars like Radhika Apte and Naveen Andrews.
Last Days Divided Critics After Its Sundance Premiere
The recent trailer for Last Days shows a compelling and intense look at Chau’s life and experiences. However, the film didn’t receive positive feedback from critics who viewed it at Sundance. Currently, it has a 28% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 18 reviews, and many critics have expressed concerns about how the movie approaches its delicate topic.
As a fan, I was really disappointed with this film, especially since there’s already a great documentary, ‘The Mission’ from 2023, that handles the story with so much more sensitivity. As The Wrap’s Chase Hutchinson put it, this movie doesn’t just feel unnecessary-it comes across as downright distasteful because of how manipulative it is in comparison.
Slant Magazine’s Chris Barsanti concurred, stating: “Rather than exploring the reasons for John Allen Chau’s risky behavior, the film jumps between several storylines, which ultimately creates more confusion than understanding.”
Last Days will be released in theaters on Oct. 24.
