In a surprising turn of events, the racehorse Haru Urara, who had amassed 113 losses without a single win during her career, inadvertently gained iconic status in Japan and abroad. Adored by many, this legendary losing horse even inspired a character in Umamusume: Pretty Derby, a popular series that features horse-girl characters. This week, Haru Urara’s passing has been mourned not only within the racing community but also by countless others beyond it.
Since her first race in 1998, the racehorse Haru Urara gained nationwide recognition due to her consistent pattern of coming in second place, earning her a familiar status in homes throughout Japan, and for some, serving as an unofficial goddess of perseverance for those who keep pushing forward despite repeated losses.
In my heart, I remember Haru Urara, the remarkable ex-racehorse who, with an unprecedented 113 race losses under her belt, became a legend in equestrian circles. She was also the inspiring figure behind the Umamusume: Pretty Derby character bearing the same name. I’m deeply saddened to share that she crossed the finish line for the final time at 29 years old.

In the world of Umamusume: Pretty Derby, an anime and gaming franchise featuring anthropomorphized horse-girls, one character adopts the moniker and notorious losing streak from a real-life retired racehorse named Haru Urara. Though Haru Urara hung up her racing boots in 2006, the fictional portrayal of this unique equine has sparked renewed interest in her peculiar past. As a result, fans have been flocking to visit Matha Farm where Haru Urara now resides during her retirement.
It’s been reported that Haru Urara passed away at the age of 29, yet her indelible spirit continues through a rather unfortunate, eternally optimistic anime horse character in a widely-played gacha game, reminding us all of her enduring impact.
Back in 2016, I was thrilled when Umamusume was initially introduced as a gacha game, but its launch was delayed. To my delight, the anime adaptation premiered ahead of schedule in 2018. Although the free-to-play Japanese version finally dropped in 2021, it wasn’t until this June that it became available to gamers like me outside Asia. The global Steam release of Umamusume was a hit among players, with over 87,000 simultaneous users at its peak during the first month after launch. Additionally, it’s accessible worldwide on iOS and Android devices as well.
